I'm trying to figure out which one is more appropriate. On one hand you have the smaller/ lighter knife, but I may need to split some larger pieces of wood or need some extra oomph on my swing. what do you think?

It depends on what you want to use it for. If you are looking to get one knife for a camping trip or hike I'd go with the RC-4. If you already have a multi-tool, SAK, or other folder, or another little fixed blade for smaller stuff then go with the RC-6.

I have the 4 and luv it. But I'll definitely be getting the 6 also.
I thought it was all BS, but its true...you cant have just one:D
Try the 4 first and work your way up; but dont forget the Izula for your pocket.

You will find RATS doing all sorts of tasks and many times they their functions overlap. The only limit is your imagination. For example, I never chop firewood with a knife, but RATS do it with ease and it is good to know I can do so with my 4,5, or 6. I do routinely use them for meat and vegetable prep when camping or outdoor cooking. My experience with knives has been mostly in the military and hunting. The RAT PACK crew bring a wealth of knowledge through vast experience. We all just enjoy having a good time with our RATS, so will you.

If you plan on carrying it, I have found the RC-4 to be more to my liking. I would say the sheath is nicer on it too.

You will have to decide what the your PRIMARY knife need is. There is a 2" difference in blade length which is quite a bit. For general outdoor/hunting/camping/hiking, the RC-4 will do great. But, if you get into specialized needs, as you mentioned about the larger wood, then you would need the RC-6.

You may want to start with the RC-4 & see how things go with it.

I am relatively new to the RAT family and so far have the RC-4, RC-6 and an Izula on the way. Between the 4 and 6, I would say that the RC-4 is a more general purpose knife. Wish October would hurry and get here so I can field test it on a deer.

The RC-6. The grip on the RC-4 is too small for the size of the blade -- at least for my hands. I haven't found the length of the RC-6 to be detrimental to outdoors work. If you want more versatility, pair the RC-6 with an RC-3, and you're set. Until the RChop comes out, that is. . .:D

Kinda like asking, The "T" or the "A" , which do you prefer ?
The "A". ;)
If'n I'm looking at the "A", then the part that makes the annoying noises is facing the other way. . .:D:D

I just an RC 3 after having an RC 6. I think this is the perfect pair. Small and large.

I'm going with the RC-4, I got rid of all of my RC-6s. I have RC-4s stashed everywhere. The RC-6 was either too big or too small for my use, but YMMV. Get the RC-4 and a short machete.

I have an Ontario TAK-1, which is very similar to the RC-4 (minus the crapier TAK sheath) and it works great at batoning branches and splitting wood. BUT... I like to have multiple knife systems and find that the TAK-1 is really good all by itself, SO I think the RC-6 would be a better choice -if you want it to be part of a multiple system. If so, I would go with the RC-6 combined with a smaller knife -like an Izula or RC-3

If you want a "stand alone knife" then maybe go with the RC-4

Just my thoughts so far, They often change and I am no expert.

I have the RC4 and love it, but to me, it's a bit too big to be an EDC knife. I might have to get the RC3. I'll get the 5 or 6 as soon as I get back home from here (iraq).

I believe need dictates which blade to carry. If your not for sure, err on the big side.

I do think the RC6 should have a companion blade like the RC3(my favorite) or the Isula.

I'd go for the RC-4 alone, or with a 6-3 combo if that's an option. I love the handle on the 6 and the blade isn't "too" long for most tasks.
