If you were eventually gonna buy these four Spydercos but could only pick two for the time being, just for EDC, which would you choose and why? Lava, UK Pen Knife/foliage green or black, Caly 3 or Para Military/PE..

If you don't have any legal restrictions limiting your choice, the Caly 3 (or Para, but I don't like the ergos on the para, and the ergos on the Caly are top).

I'm sure they are all nice knives. Out of the four you listed, I have only the Para, and the Para makes for one heck of an EDC. Light and strong all in one package.

I would pick the caly3 and the Para. That way you can use the caly3 as your nice EDC and when you expect to be doing a little more heavy cutting or feel like you will need a bigger blade than you can switch to the para.

P-MIL. For these reasons: Compression lock. Open build. And the traditional Spyderco blade shape.

Out of those four, I'd say the Para Military and the Caly 3. I don't have either, but I do like my Military and my Native. Both are similar to the Para and the Caly 3, so those would be my choices.

Caly3 is my favorite knife, I EDC it since they came out. IMHO it is almost perfect EDC, as perfect as production knife can be.
I never cared about other knives on your list. I like the look of UKPK (it is Caly3 without lock), especially orange, but prefer locking folder for EDC.
If you are planning to rotate these EDCs, than Caly3/UKPK combo makes sense. You will see a difference between two different steels and locking folder vs. non-locking.
If you are planning to carry two knives together, than I would choose second knife with different size of the blade, or type of the edge.
Good luck.

Thank you all for the replies and input/suggestions! Especially those of you with experience with these models.. It seems the two strongest candidates are the Caly 3 and Para Military, must be for good reason. I think they'll be the two (for now) that I'll pick up.. and maybe get the Lava later on (I have 2 Subcoms anyway) As soon as they arrive and I get to play with'em, I'll post my thoughts/pics, if my dang camera works:grumpy: Again, thanks! P.s. SPYDERCO ROCKS!!!

If it's not too late, I'd actually recommend a different setup: pmil and lava. While I think that the pmil and the caly3 are the two best knives in the group, I think they are very similar and therefore you would really only be getting one type of knife. I feel like the lava and the pmil are two very different knives (the pmil is big and black, while the lava could be more of a dress knife) and those two would get you the widest variety of function.

Yeah, that would be a good setup Hesparus.. since they are two different blade styles and knive shapes, giving you variety. I've been liking the Lava more n more but the weight of the SS just kinda throws me off, that's why I might wait a bit before getting one..

Just got my Para yesterday and I'm trying to adjust to ways to open and close it. Seems strong and incredibly sturdy for such a lightweight knife.

It is strong and sturdy for sure. My Para never ceases to amaze me.

I would reccomend the Paramilitary and the UKPK...

1) Para
-Super heavy duty but super easy to carry. The cut anything and keep going survival knife that still looks civilized.

2) UKPK
-For more casual days, slimmer and lighter than the Caly 3, so easier to carry. Also, made in Golden with S30V. For the lighter cutting chores you won't miss the lock.

Then....

3) Serrated SS Cricket
-Throw it in the bottom of your pocket to compliment either knife. More NKP friendly, but cuts through anything.

I just got a UKPK the other day. A VERY nice knife. The lock thing doesn't bother me, just need to use a little common sense. It's balanced perfect, and absolutely razor sharp. If you want to try something new and refreshing, grab one (nice colors too). I'm sure if you're like me, you will end up with all of them down the road anyway :D

I've got all of them. I'd vote for the para and the lava. To me, they're the two opposites of the 4 you mentioned.

The para is going to do just about anything you want it to do, and it's still nice and light. The lava is a good small edc for work or non-knife places. The other two can fill in that middle spot as time goes on.

Too tough a choice, since everyone has good things to say about all of them... so I ordered them all! Guess I'll find out how much I like each one. Now I await the dreaded credit card bill...
