Hey everyone,
Let me start by saying this is my first post. I also consider myself beginner, so i appreciate your patience. I was recently lucky enough to acquire a kmg grinder. I have been working on getting my bevels to a standard that I feel passable. I have tried a few grinding jigs that I made, and they worked pretty well. I also realize I should be practicing free hand grinds which I am.
So my question is. With the KMG grinder I have the ability to adjust the platen angle. Can I just clamp my blade to a piece of angle iron, set the angle on the platen, instead of the angle iron having set screws to adjust angle. It seems like it would work, I have just never seen anyone do it before. So I figured there was a reason.
Thanks so much!
Phil

You should hit report post on this and ask a mod to move it to maintenance or the bladesmith areas. This is for IT kinda questions here.

Yep, that'll work too and I've seen a number of makers do it that way. Some also use their adjustable work rests to change the angle when using a square (90-degree) fixture/jig to hold the blade.

Also, look into the bubble jig as it's really helpful for adjusting to freehand grinding.

I ask the same question many time ...no answer :) I think that people just like to complicate simple things ..........:D
Yes , I use to grind in the way you describe .You can try this way , TWO angle iron is much better and help with even plunge line ;)

Smart guy . . . .. .

I just recently started using a bubble jig when I upgraded to a 2x72 and it helps a bunch. The main thing is it helps you get muscle memory for angles and you can eventually wean off it if you wanted to.

i do something like this. i don't clamp, the angle iron has threaded holes the same size as the tang and i bolt the two together. i adjust the platen to 2* to 3* and grind until the apex is 1/2 mm or so preheat treat. after heat treat, i either continue at 2* or 3* or use an angle iron with a 7*.
