Bevel grinding - edge of belt?

Hi guys,

Another silly question. I've tried searching but keep finding threads on sharpening. When doing actual bevel grinding, when do you or don't you grind against the belt edge vs the entire flat of the belt?

Thanks,

DH

I use the edge sometimes when I'm doing hollow grinds. Be careful or you will get too deep at the plunge.

I grind against the flat most of the time, but use the edge of the belt for stubborn spots on the blade that don't get enough or uniform contact, like the edge right after the sharpening choil. But once I create my apex in those spots, I use the flat again to make everything uniform.

EDIT: This is for sharpening; I just noticed you were talking about bevels.

Thanks guys.. Been using the flats almost entirely but didn't know if there was an appropriate time to do otherwise!

I can't say I have ever deliberately used the belt edge when flat grinding a bevel. The more flat against the platen the better.
On knives without a plunge (kitchen knives and Japanese blades), after establishing the basic bevels holding the blade perpendicular to the belt, I sometimes grind on the platen holding the blade vertically to get the max contact at one time. This assures a completely flat blade bevel from tip to ricasso.
