Bevel grinding

I have a quick question. When you grind bevels on say a drop point hunter, do you pull the blade straight across from the plunge lines to the tip. Or do you start off straight and then follow the curve of the blade. The reason I ask is because on the picture below ( the third knife I’ve ever ground) I followed the curve of the blade. I was wandering how people pull straight across the a jig and get the same result. Am I wasting effort trying to bend my whole body as I get to the curve? Also I use a bubble jig and plunge jig until I’m about 50% there the. Swap to freehand. Don’t know if that helps. And somehow I lost the very tip of my knife. Still not sure exactly how that happened. Any advice is welcome and thank you in advance! I have plenty to learn.

Depends on the grind. For a partial height hollow grind like that yeah you have to wiggle and jiggle a bit. Not so much with a FFG and some distal taper. As you discovered, you have to go SLOW out at the tip no matter what kind of grind you are doing.

I think this is the video where he describes how to do the tip.
If not that one it's in one of his videos on grinding.

Ok I’ll try going a bit slower. I do mover kinda fast. I did however accidentally set my shirt on fire Saturday with a soft back 200 grit belt and that has a lot to do with it lol

I do angle the blade towards the tip but only very slightly. It looks (and sounds:"bend my whole body") like you are curving too much. I curve probably about 8-15 degrees with the blade curve and pull the handle towards myself slightly.

About the tip, it looks to me you pulled the handle back towards yourself too far and ground it off.

One more thing, it looks like you have a bit of a 2 inch line. That is the line 2 inches away from the plunge where you have a slight 'trough' for lack of a better word and the grind line goes up a bit from the 2 inch wide sanding belt. This can be simply fixed by slightly pulling the tip away from the belt when you approach the plunge.

happy honing

I start at the tip and work my way back to the plunge. I've always been a little bass akwards.

Thanks man I honestly haven’t tried pulling the handle towards myself. But my stepdad did Point out that when I was grinding I had the tendency to push the handle in. I never would have noticed myself so I’m glad he watched. so that is corrected. I will give pulling the handle out slightly a shot and bending less. Thanks for the input

Are you standing close enough to the grinder to see the far edge touch the belt flush in the flat you’ve established?
