Hi everybody

I was recently given a piece of 1/16' 1095 that I want to make into a small kitchen knife. I am worried about cracking the edge if I heat treat after grinding the primary bevel. It's such a thin piece of steel to begin with...

Would it be better to heat treat, then grind the bevel? I grind my bevels with a hand sander rig (I don't have the money for a nice belt grinder)...So I'm also worried about grinding post heat treat taking way too long...

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

1/16 is pretty damn thin. Unless we're talking a mouse sander, it should go fast enough.

I think it might also help prevent warping to quench it before grinding.

I've done 1/16" a few times. I strongly advise against grinding before your heat treat - I've had mega warps as a consequence.

Just get the profile, heat treat, then grind in the bevels.

Agree with RX-79G: definitely keep it as cool as possible throughout grinding. Submerge it often, and use only fresh sandpaper.

I agree. I always grind my bevels post HT on 1/16" stock.

Now, assuming your username is two words, where does the space go? :D
