I'm attempting my first two knives and I've notices my bevels don't look right. I am using a file and grinding freehand. The bevels come to a point, which you can't really see in the picture but they don't have that grind look. Could this be to do with the file I am using?

Welcome to Shop Talk. Fill out the info in your profile ( age, location, hobbies/occupation/etc.) so we know a bit about you.
When posting photos or asking questions about a project, give us the details like intended style/use, steel type, blade and handle dimensions and blade thickness, and how it will be heat treated. This helps with better answers and suggestions.

You can't see much detail in the photos, but I think the biggest problem with the look is that the blades don't look right. Go to The Gallery or do some searches for knife photos and compare your blades with what you see. Yours have the "sharpened bar of steel" look that many new makers pick. They also look rather fat? What type knives will these be?

Add some curve to the spine and drop the tip 25% and the knife will suddenly take on a new look. This is still doable on your blade.

The best way to start a knife project is with a full drawing. Re-draw it until it looks good. Then post the drawing here for suggestions and critique by folks who have made lots of knives. They will see things you don't. This will save making Newbie mistakes and start you off on better knives.

File and sand in smooth long strokes from the spine to te edge. Don't "saw" back and forth with the file or paper...lift it at the end of each stroke and return to the spine for the next one.

It takes time to make a good bevel, and time to learn the hand skills to do it, so don't get discouraged...keep at it. If the edge gets too thin and starts top get sharp. just file it back a few strokes. Many blades end up a tad narrower when done, which is usually a good thing.
