Bevel wear?

Adding tips for SAK. As mentioned by David, it's soft. You can go 15 per side, but finish it with 20 per side microbevel. The recommended angle is 35-40 inclusive.

I had problem with OH Sentinel, which turned out to be too shallow an angle. :)

Thanks again David and Chris.Chris is the edge going to last by doing that? seems like I'm going to have to repeat the process I just learned more often.

Re: microbevel

On an edge that's maybe a little thin for the steel used, a microbevel can make it more durable. In your case, since you just put a new bevel on yours, I'd just use it a while. See how it holds up. Your edge might already be in the ballpark of 20 per side anyway, without the microbevel. Don't worry too much about doing that now. Microbevels need to be done very lightly, and it's just as easy to mess them up if not done properly (consistent angle, VERY light pressure and just a few strokes; it's very easy to overdo it). If not done correctly, it'll just blunt the edge. Then your previous good work is undone.

Yea I think I've managed to blunt the edge of my sak.I went as lightly 10-12 times each side light as possible while still having some abrasiveness with the 600 grit sandpaper and the ceramic rod. It's blunter than it was before and edge is probably warped and rolled.Seems like it's better for me to just get a new one seems like the most cost effective.

I thought sak's were supposed to be real easy to sharpen but it's been giving me the most trouble out of everything in the house.

No need to replace it. Unless, that is, you really want a 2nd one.

Keep working at it. If need be, go back and repeat what you did before, when you put the new bevel on it. Learning how to do it consistently is all about repetition; doing it over and over, with one or multiple knives, until your hands get the feel for it. Once I managed to get a really good edge on the first one, that really lit the fire to do it again. That was about 2-1/2 years ago for me; I think I've completely re-bevelled the edges on at least 40 or 50 knives since then. Both my own, and for friends. I kept 'buying new ones' for a long time prior, without really knowing how to sharpen them. I liked my collection before, but have gotten a lot more satisfaction out of finally being able to put 'my own' preferred edge on them. In fact, I've just finished doing another one tonight. I still learn a little more, with each one.

Don't give up on it. I know it's frustrating at this stage of the game, when trying to get it all figured out. But if you stick with it, until you get over this hurdle, I guarantee you'll get a LOT more satisfaction out of a knife that you figured out how to sharpen on your own.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.I think I will get another sak,a spartan probably and use the current one as something to practice knife sharpening etc. on.Just can't stand not having a sharp, legal, utilitarian knife on me.Besides caught the slippy/sak bug and needed to find an excuse to go out and buy another anyways:D.

While you're at it, get also the Victorinox sharpener. The V slotted ceramic can be used as final touch before stropping to give it 40 degree microbevel. With this method, I never have problem with SAK anymore ;)
