Just FYI he's twice now contacted a seller that he'll take something then disappeared. Perhaps he's thinking they send the item first.

Dave do you know if this scam artist goes by any other names? The reason I ask is that I have been getting a lot of trade offers from people I have never heard of before here on BF recently. Most of them have only been on Bladeforums for a month or 2 and none of them have purchased a real membership. I am wondering for buying, selling and ALL trading if it wouldn't be a good idea to require the participants to me valid members. Just a suggestion. It seems like we have been seeing more cockroaches than usual here in the last 3 months. JD

How do you define "valid member"? Take a look over to TGB&U and you can see that the biggest ripoffs have been commited by paying members.

im new and have had bought 4 knives from 3 other members so far-
why should i get punished for what he did-

I think the point is that quite a few that would join here just to rip people off might be unwilling to pay the $25.00 for a gold membership. The problem is that vast majority of the registered members are honest and would be punished by this policy. I do however think that it is a good idea to get an upgraded membership just to show support for the forum.

And the other point is if you're the seller, and the buyer has no history, don't send the knife first.

Two of the biggest scoundrels at BFC had histories here before they went bad. What I am reacting to, and I could be wrong here, is the suggestion that if you are not a paying member you should not be allowed to buy here. Which is a decision to be made by Sparks, not the “valid” members? I have done business with individuals and dealers here and elsewhere and I have never stung anyone in my life, despite the fact that I am not a paying member.
If a seller sends an unknown buyer anything before payment is received then shame on them.

I have been told money order was sent on 2/13.... still waiting

and now the other sebenza I was supposed to buy is on eGay!

this guys a wingnut for sure! BEWARE!:jerkit: :jerkit: :jerkit: :jerkit: :jerkit: :thumbdn:

A false sense of security from someone bying a "real" membership is no substitute for doing due dilligence. Why limit your business opportunities when you can run the person through GB&U? If they're new, and you're uncomfortable, then don't do the deal or insist they send the money first. There's nobody insisting you sell to the first (or even the third) person who shows an interest in your knives and such if YOU are not comfortable dealing with them. On the whole though, I find people here to be very honest and trusting- which is amazing considering the sums we're often discussing when it comes to knives for sale.

And for the record, if I were a conman (which I'm not and have done several deals on this board to a successful conclusion) and knew I could scam someone just by buying a membership, I wouldn't hesitate. Think about it- if you spend $25.00 on a membership and manage to get someone to send you a Sebenza which you don't pay for, you've made a substantial profit. It may not work more than once, but it did work...at least once. That's my view of it anyway.
