Someone tried to get me to mail a knife after receiving a personal check. A quick check makes me think it is a scam. Please Beware. I came give names if you email me.

more details?

They wanted to pay you with a check and then you would mail the knife after you received the check?

I have done this a few times but I am careful about it. I hold on to the knife till the check has cleared. Then I mail it. It is rare, but happens. Not everyone is on PayPal etc.

Not necessarily a scam, but potentially
Are they asking if they can send you a check . It can be done but you must make sure it is fully cleared before sending the knife, unless you know the person. A USPS money order is safer and can be cashed at PO at same time as shipping. Their BF feedback, participation and duration of membership all play a part in the decision, as well as the value of the transaction and if you could afford the loss if by chance it came to that.
Of course PP would be best, but not all have it including me(I have an access problem)

What was the agreement for payment? Did they send you a personal check after agreeing to a different form of payment? More details or better yet start from the beginning

Did they send you a check for $3000, advise you take the funds for the the knife & forward the rest to their agent/lawyer/ favorite charity/whatever?
Yes, that's a scam
If not, it's not so clear... at least you didn't post a name (though a scammer warning without identifying the scammer is pretty useless)

If there is a branch of their bank near where you live, go there and cash the check.

If you wanted to verify the authenticity of any check- Take it to one of the Check Cashing Stores. They'll verify the funds before they pay you. There's fees for the service.

Not every one uses pay pal or electronic payments for a variety of reasons. Just wait until the check clears before you mail the knife.
