Beware of your display cases!!!

I took my "Blue" 2000 Bucklock out of the display case to take a picture and noticed something on the bolsters that were against the felt lining of the case. When I started taking others out I almost got sick! I don't have any idea what caused this to happen, but it must be something in the felt lining. Damn!:mad::mad::mad:

I tried some Flitz on one so far, but it doesn't remove it and I fear the metal is corroded and beyond polishing!

Bizarre! You live down in sunny dry California, not humid swamp country, don't you?

I imagine they can be fixed on a buffing wheel, but what a disappointment. Distressing, actually.

Try Simichrome. Flitz is about the finest polish. Look under magnification if you can and see if the metal is actually pitted.

If not, you should not have to use a motorized buffer to remove that. Typically, if left in sheaths, the brass bolsters on 110's get that green corrosion on them. It comes off easily with Simichrome or something like Mothers Mag wheel polish.

I guess I need to ask about the display cases, could you show pictures of the cases and contact points. Were these Buck cases or custom? and where did the felt come from? I wonder if a mineral dye in the felt is causing a metallurgic reaction? Are all the felts the same (that caused the problem)?

Would this work for Nickel Silver? Brass is one thing...

That would bum me out also!

Hope you can get them cleaned up. Seems odd. Maybe put a vapor barrier packet in the cases or a small desiccant/dehumidifier?

May be worth it to replace the felt with something else.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel_silver

Nickel silver, also known as German silver, paktong, new silver or alpacca (or alpaca), is a copper alloy with nickel and often zinc. The usual formulation is 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc.[1] In fact, all modern, commercially important nickel silvers (such as those standardized under ASTM B122) contain significant amounts of zinc, and are sometimes considered a subset of brass.[2]

Nickel silver is named for its silvery appearance, but contains no elemental silver unless plated.

NS could almost be called "white brass" and many people have been surprised to notice their NS bolsters, for example, appearing somewhat yellow.

This only happened in one case. It's a custom job with red felt covering foam and the knives are held in by the pressure of the glass in the lid. I posted a picture of the case full of Bucklocks sometime back.

This is the bolster of the far left knife in the first picture after using Mothers Mag Polish on it. I can feel the pitts left in the metal with my fingernail.

Here's the picture of the case.

I am truly shoocked about that. I have a simular case for some late 70's 100 series knives, just checked them out, and not seeing anything yet. Will be keeping an eye on them though. Thank you for the information, maybe Leroy can clean them up for you, or Buck. You may want to talk to Joe and see what he says. HL

I just checked out this case that was made by or for Buck. The 532 in this one has the same thing happening to it! The problem seems to be limited to knives with NS bolsters. The others in this case still look fine.

I know from custom bookbinding with cloth and leather that red and blue dyes are the most fugitive. Meaning that it is a dye that is most likely to migrate and stain things. It's beginning to look like the problem is with migration of a chemical/mineral dye causing a reaction with the metal.

There's no adhesive holding the felt to the foam, so that's not a factor. I just sent Joe an e-mail asking if he thinks Buck could do anything for them if I send the in.

I just put them away, everytime I look at them it makes me want to :barf::barf:

May be an option to have someone engrave that area, or do a "native" type of finish like Yellowhorse does to them.

Buffing could cause issues as has been mentioned. Doing a little refinishing would cover it up and not remove as much metal.

Again, that would really bum me out also!

Man I'm sorry about that Plum, thats a terrible shame. I bet Joe will help you out, they gotta be able to at least buff em out. I hope.

I do want to apologize to 110 Dave. My problems are trivial and less than nothing compared to what he's going through right now. I shouldn't have made such a big deal of of it right now.

I'm just glad that I didn't order anymore of the cases, I intended to buy several more. They are pretty cool because they have a bottom compartment that is deep enough to hold the knives boxes. Maybe I can get some good stuff to line it with, but I'm going to be real leery of any kind of foam or fabric now.
