I have been on this forum for a quite a while. From what I have read it seems the top 4 Wilderness survival knives are:

1. Fallkniven F-1
2. Rat 3
3. Bark River Northstar
4. Mora

Which one is the best?

I have been a Chopper and folder combo guy for many years. I think you guys have finally made me see the light. A medium to small knife with a few folders might just be the most practical.

Out of those, I'd go with the F1 any day. Compared to the other three, a Mora is right out. Moras are good knives, even brilliant knives for the price, but they're nowhere near as sturdy and strong as something like the F1.

out of the above knives my first pick would also be the F1, then mora. I would choose the mora second because I love & and am very use to working with a "scandi" grind.

The F1 is a fantastic knife. I do love my F1, but not enough to use it as much as my Mora(s).

I'd pick the Mora as my favorite. It is a great balance of functionality and affordability. I could probably get 8 or 9 Moras for what I paid for my F1.

I'd vote for the Cold Steel Carbon V Master Hunter, but it wasn't on the list.

Hey Guys..

For me it's the FI and Mora as well..

Even though the Mora is sub $15, don't shrug it off as not being sturdy enough to do bushcraft.. It is Extremely able to do bushcraft and at some times I may even reach for the Mora over the FI...

The Mora is a purebred cutter and does a very good job at slicing..

Over here, Moras are under $7. :) I definitely agree that they're sturdy enough for bushcraft, but even so, I'd much rather go with an F1. The F1 is so much stronger than a Mora that it's not quite fair to compare them. I tend to prefer Moras for the kind of tasks I wouldn't want to put a knife through - they're cheap enough to throw away once you're done. But if I had to buy myself one of those four knives and then use it for all the bushcraft I do, I'd never choose a Mora over the F1.

Hey Elen...

Theres No doubt that the FI is a better knife for sure...

However I do like a 780 Triflex for certain things..
There is something to be said for a thin blades though...

What is the thickness of the Mora? The F1 is 4.5mm, almost 0.185, which is 3/16".

The Rat 3 has a 3.5" blade and has gotten rave reviews from Wilderness folk. The F-1 has a 3.8" blade, not much bigger.

I own a CS MH but I felt it has a wide blade for some wilderness cutting needs. So I am thinking of a slightly narower blade for more control.

here's a pic of my 3 favorite knives these days... also a SAK camper...

- fiddleback nessmuk in rosewood
- ML deep woods skinner.. 5 in. 1095 blade aged hickory handle
- ML hatched woods knife... 3.5 in. 1095 blade and hatched balck walnut handle.... all 3 knives are wicked sharp even after mass amounts of use....

Mtn folk Mike, Those are some beautiful knives. I love the way carbon gets worn and colorful.

Of your list, I own and have used numbers 1, 3, and 4. I have had the F1 the least amount of time but have gained some experience with it already.

As far as choosing the superior knife, all "politics" aside, I'd pick the Northstar 9 times out of 10. I've done more and been more places with a Northstar than any of the others listed. It has never left me wanting more knife.

Of the four, I have not used the Rat 3. I have not heard a single negative -- but some noted the handle is a "3-finger" hold for them.

The MORA is the best slicer 'cause it's so thin. But it's in a whole different category from the other two, F-1 and NS, due to their FAR greater sturdiness. There are things you canot do with it that I could (but hope never to have to) do with the F-1 and NS.

Between the F-1 and the NS, the NS is the better cutter and driller from my experience. The micarta handle on the first I got needed some work to fit me. The "Stag Bone" felt perfect for me outta' the box.

But I sure wouldn't feel worried if I had the F-1. Tough, sharp knife, made for woods work.

1)RAT-3
2)Busse SFNO
3)Gossman Hunter
4)Spyderco Military

I am a HUGE RAT-3 fan, I got it and I have never regretted it. I do so much work with this lil guy. 2nd is my SFNO just because I dont get to use it as much but its one of my fav knives ever. My gossman hunter has field dressed dozens of deer of my own and others and will NOT hunt w/o it. My spyderco mili is always in the pocket and cuts like a demon, which is a great compliment to my fixed blades.

Ironically I have a huge amount of choppers but they are not what I use the most. They are the most fun, but I would say my 4" gossman or my RAT-3 see alot of my work. Both are made of D-2 and I dont know what Scott does to his but it just gets scary sharp and stays that way.
