What about something similar to the old Aitor spear/skinner blade. It would be better and probably easier to make with a slightly longer barb, and more simplified handle.
Only problem with a gig is that it serves only one purpose. I used to make split tipped spears for spearing carp when I was a kid, a smaller one for frogs is just as easy. I would split the wood, sharpen the tips, have some string tied to a piece of wood that kept the points spread and was pulled out when you stuck your fish.
I like the shape of the Hoffman, but it is way to thick to be effective as a spear. It would have to be probably 1/8" thick.
