BG 42 blade

Wolf, You'll have to visit the bay and find one for sale . Or if other steels could satisfy your quest ... Cabela's has 110's with S30V steel . ?? Just suggesting . DM

No offence................just old school here ..........that S30V stuff sounds like something computer generated made in outer space..... not of this earth steel. I know........get with the day dad!

sorry. just tired of the new stuff.

??????? What, I concider BG-42 the same "New Stuff" as S30V! There is still a lot of 440C knives out there, can't get any more old school than that:D No offence taken.

JB,Yes, Bucks 440C is certainly old school . DM

I understand.

I have this image in my head of S30V being a powdered steel that is mixed up in a batter and then compressed into a blank from which a blade is made.

But BG42 sounds like pure bearing-grade steel and images great strength.

So there you are.......I use S30V and it cuts just fine, but somewhere in the far back reaches of my mind there is some doubt about real strength.

So BG42 remains my favorite of the modern steels and 440C of the older steels......I also kind of like D2.

But S30V will always have this near-invisible question mark after it for me.

That was a great find wolfthing. The photo's show the knife sheath as a Cabelas AG, looks like the seller swapped the S30V blade for the BG-42 blade. I do understand the want/need to have the out of this world super steel that is no longer available;).

Sort of like the old vacumn tube vs transistors. ;)

Superman compresses coal into diamonds.................guess super steels are the same prinipal.
I use carbide cutters all day long...............except when tool steel works better...........the carbide doesn't like any impact or shock. That's why I get a funny feel about powdered metal blades.

They're more than likely just fine though..........any blade will break if abused.

Are you guys saying that a tool steel, well in this case a stainless tool steel will take more shock than a CPM steel ? DM

David, If you mean shock like a picture of Rosie O'donel in a nighty? No, Nothing can take that kind of shock! :)

Sea, That would qualify as a Nightmare . What I was meaning is more like hard use . Like, malleting it thru a large Mule deer's pelvis or a pine limb for kindeling . DM

Cutting being the key word ;)

Depends on the situation I think! I think 420HC may be tougher than some super steels. :D But then again, I did tear up a nice alpha hunter cutting through a deers pelvis some years back, Now I own a hatchet :D
My Dad also tore up an older 440C 119 years ago cutting through a deers brisket. (that one was warrantied)

Just my opinion, but I don't think any 110 should be used for such things, no matter what blade steel! A knife is still for cutting!

I know that everyone has their opinions about blade steel, and I like all of Bucks!!! Each type also lends itself better in certain knife/blade shapes.

Now I just wish I had more Bg-42 knives laying around, I would sell the extra 1 and buy 2 custom shops in S30V :D

Oh, congrats on that ironwood BG-42 score BTW, that is a gorgeous knife! I was watching to see if it would sell! I also watched the carbon fiber one, (I was interested in it) but it was relisted for more $$$ after it didnt sell the first time....

Hmmmm, BG-42 blades are made of ball bearing steel... lots of little ball bearings in the general shape of a 110 blade - an oxy-acetyline torch... kind of a macro version of CPM? Probably just need more caffein!

I have several Custom Shop 110s with BG-42 - and one AG 110 with S30V. The S30V is more straight forward to resharpen. Both are about equal in edge-keeping longevity with the S30V 110 AG actually being a bit better razor out of the box. Any future CS 110s will happily come in S30V.
