BG-42, not popular??

I'm stoked that everyone has such good things to say about BG-42! The last time I was aot to the Loveless shop,(about a month ago), I ground one out for myself. Its a little 3 1/4" Droped Hunter. I ground it out of 3/16"X1 1/2" Stock, so yes it is avaliable in flat stock. I think I will send it out to Paul Bos and ask him to put it in a run of Bg-42 the next time he runs a batch. Looking forward to finishing it up, and giving it a try out. On a side note, it was the only way I could afford a knife from the Loveless Shop. go there and make it myself!!! Hee!Hee! So when is a knife from the Loveless Shop, not a Loveless? Looking Good!

It used to come in round stock but there was an article with Chris Reeve in BLADE magazine in 2000 where they were asking Reeve about BG(while he still used it) and he said that with BG's resurgence in the knife industry in the 90's they convinced Latrobe to produce BG-42 in flat bars

I didn't know what was SHARP until i got my Buck Custom in BG-42.. that blade was bloody scary sharp!!!

The biggest problem with BG-42 availibility is that its just way too maticulous to heat treat. It takes a LONG time to complete the treatment process for BG-42. much longer than most cuttlery steels.

This means that it is only produced when they build up a big enough order. its not cost effective to make a small batch; the time it takes ties up equipment and costs money.

Maybe, but it sure is worth it. I had a hunting/skinning knife made of BG42 by Matt Harilstadt. I used to be a meatcutter in my high school & college days so I know how to sharpen a knife. He had this one hardened to about Rc 62. It just doesn't get dull! I think it's worth the extra money (if anyone feels like they can charge more for it). This knife and my 1997 era Sebenza in Bg42 are my two favorite knives.

Jack, have you gotten to look at and put your hands on the Carbon Fibre, BG42 sprint run Military model Spyderco put out last year? It's one of the best production knives of any kind I've ever had or used. It's not really expensive as knives go either. Joe

When I first heard about this new Spyderco, I just "Had" to have one. I liked it so much, I bought another for a spare. Been carrying the first one for about 6 months and have yet to have to sharpen it, other than a light stropping on the back of an old leather belt.

Oh yeah, I should have my third one in tomorrow's mail. ;)

Please, Sal. Make a Paramilitary version of this knife!

I like the way BG-42 performs as well. Would like to see a few more Spydies in this steel.

I have A sog recondo in bg-42 and i like the knife, i just dont like the straight edge part of it. It is sharpened on one edge only byt its a larger angle than most knives so it is much harder to sharpen with a v sharpener like the spyderco sharpmake, though i understand to sharpen bg-42 you need daimond type sharpeners, is this correct?

I would like the have the edge reground to a smaller angle, would a normal knife sharpener be able to do this, or should I look for something more special. for the $130 or so i think i payed for it years ago id rather not take it to a belt sander... would that even work?

Since the edge is a single grind and is a larger angle cutting things can be weird because the blade, if it bites wrong, will want to angle a certain way, in certain materials it would be hard to just press down straight.

Why don't you post this in The Toolshed: Knife Care, Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment, where you'll have more people focused on the modification?

I think what you want is a v-grind anyway, not just a narrower bevel on one side. Regular sharpening on a Sharpmaker will take a long time unless you use the diamond rods. I use a Sharpmaker on BG-42 Sebenzas, but only for touch-ups. A diamond benchstone would be quicker if you're familiar with using it. (Practice on a cheaper knife first if you aren't.)

Well its not on the top of my list of things to do, its just something id want done someday.
The serrerations are the coolest though, the only ones I have ever seen with an angle. So when i used it to carve a walking stick it left a really neat pattern, and on the pull it would really bite into rope rather than ripping at it.
This picture kind of shows the straight edge of it.

Here is mine.

As for the rest of the knife i like it.

I am with Danbo and Neil, it is my favorite stainless. Dan Burke uses it a lot in his multiblades and some of the Queen/Burke collaborations are in BG-42. They make for excellent users.

...I will just hope that someone produces a BG42 folder at under $100, even if it is zytel.

Jack

A.G. Russel has the BG-42 mini-autoclips Mastiff mentioned in stock for about $55, apparently they're overstocked.

I'm thinking about picking one up myself, I got into knives after BG-42 faded away. It sounds like a great steel and I would love to get a chance to try some out.

Well, I scored myself a Kevin Wilkins folder in BG-42!!! I could BE happier.

I'm 5 months into carrying/using mine. Like Danbo, it's still too soon to sharpen it.

it's the serrated model

I just got a Buck 881SP 1st Production Run with BG-42. Damn this thing is a tank! Blade is surprisingly sharp for what looks to be quite an obtuse grind. I'm thinking about having it reprofiled to 30-deg included. Won't do it myself likely since all I have is a sharpmaker...probably take it to my local knife shop. I'm really looking forward to checking out this steel.

My guess is that it is getting to be expensive to purchase so many knifemakers are going away from it plus the S30V popularity is at an all-time high so that is my 2 cents worth.
