Looking at millitary models for a post- holiday fix. Have a chance to grab either, the BG42 is a little less money. could you compare and contrast these two fine steels for me? I have s30v which I love and s60v which is nice but sucks if you let it go too far in bertween sharps. any hellp would be great guys!

Where can you buy the BG42 version? I saw one at newgraham but when I called them they said they haven't had it in a while.

Take what you said about S60V/440V and multiply it by two for S90V. I love mine, even bought a back-up for it, but I admit sharpening is more time-consuming than my other Millies. BG-42 on the other hand sharpens quite easily. The fine grained steel will take a wicked edge and hold it for longer than it has any right to, considering how easy it sharpens. It doesn't hold that edge nearly as long as S90V in my use, but my use is far from average. Both are fine knives, but for normal people, the BGCF Military would probably be the better choice. I'll stick with my S90V. :D

I love the S90 Version, but the BG42 remains the only one I bought an extra one I loved it so much. I love the edge BG42 takes. It's a very clean, high quality stainless, high speed ball bearing steel.

Ball bearing steels ( example 52100) make good knives due to the carbide structure and cleanlieness. BG42 is one of the few stainless ball bearing steels.

BG42 has always been fairly time consuming to buy with up to one year waiting times for delivery. Apparently the new company has increased the minimum order, increased price, and also increased waiting time, so I've heard.

S90V is also an expensive, super high quality steel, but Crucible is easier for knife companies to work with.

The bottom line is both steels are excellent, but slightly different strengths & weaknesses. I typically say "get both", and in this case there's good reason too do so.

If you can't, get the one that suits you best.

I don't know how much more BG42 will be used for knives. If the PITA factor gets too high, it won't be used much anymore for knives as there are other very high quality, high performance steels available.

It's one of my all time favorites, but so is S90V. Joe

If you want the best EDC version of the Military get the S90V. The BG-42 version is extremely smooth and the lock tension is a fair bit less, which makes it very nice to play with but not as good for EDC.
The carbon fibre pattern on the BG-42 model is a little shinier as well.

IMO the BG-42 model is more of a collector and the S90V just beggs to be used.
