BG 42 over S30V?

Just curious within Sebenza users if they have a preference between the two blade steels. I seem to only own BG42 models.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

When I got my BG42 Sebenza, Iwas sold on BG42! S30V took some getting used to.I would swap the blade for BG42 if I could.

My Sebenza and Mnandi blades in S30v seem to cut better than and hold an edge about as well the old Sebbies in BG42. Sold my BG42 stock.

Here's another vote for S30V. If Chris thinks it's the best steel to use then that's good enough for me. ;)

Well, does anyone know the difference in rust resistance between the two steels? I love BG42, and I wonder how the S30V compares on this field?

I have both and can't tell any difference. I also agree with trane fan.

John...

I, too, have Sebenzas in both BG42 and S30V and can't really see a huge difference in performance. They're both great.

not being a smart a$$, that was the idea of S30V. Some thing the average consumer could sharpen. BG42 is a bit more work, just as Bucks old 425m was.Buck took 10 years to change out that steel.Chris Reeve developed a new one.
Thats why I pay the $ for his stuff.

As far a corrorsion resistance. A carbon based steels are not considered stainless unless they have 13.00% Chromium(Cr). BG-42 might have a little advantage with 14.50% chromium compaired to S30v's 14.00%. But taking into consideration that Vanadium(V) also plays a part with chromium to help fight rust; S30 has a wopping 5.50% to BG's 1.20%. It's a hard comparison due to the way both steels are manufactured. Two completely different processes. I've still found BG-42 to be my favorite when it comes to my Sebenza's.

I've got Sebenzas with both steels and for some reason I seem to like the BG42 a little better. Maybe because it seems to hold an edge a little better. (Strangely, my BG42 Sebenza's blade shape is a little different than my S30V Sebenza, even though they're both Regular models. The S30V blade shape is a little closer to the Classic blade shape than the BG42.)
Anyway...since S30V supposedly has greater toughness, I'd probably choose it over BG42 if I could have only one.

BG42 is my favorite stainless steel. I have Sebbies with both steels. I notice with the S30V blades, that I get teeny little microchips in the edge. BG42 does not do this. ??? My vote is for BG42.

I'm with Danbo on the teeny tiny chip thing with the S30V. It has happened to a couple of mine & I haven't been impressed with that :grumpy:

I personally prefer the BG-42 over the S30V though I am told the S30V is "better". I can sharpen the BG-42 better than I can the S30V. Though that could just be me. Other people can do the S30V better than the BG-42.
The BG-42 can be polished to a high shine while the S30V...haven't been able to do a darn thing with it.

Cutting wise.....both do an outstanding job for me. Pretty much a draw there.

A tough choice indeed. My money goes on the BG-42. :)

I have a small Sebenze in S30. The steel seems to dull quickly, and never seems to get as sharp as I like. I can't get S30 to push cut copier paper, but it will slice ok. It can and will push/slice newsprint ok. It doesn't seem to like to slice cardboard without going dull quickly. I don't know. BG-42, on the other hand seems to take and keep a great razor edge. Holds it a long time, too. So I would definitely vote for the BG-42.

I sharpen both identically with an Edgepro, so I can't explain the difference, especially when others just love S30V. YMMV.

I'm going thru this exact same thing right now. I got a sebenza off eBay that was listed as s30v, but when it arrived it was actually a bg42 made in 1999. I was wondering if I should keep this, or have the store switch me for an s30v. it appears that bg42 is winning in this post by about 10 to 6. so I am still confused.

I have not used my bg42 sebenza yet, since I have not made a decision on whether to keep it or not. so I have not relevant info for any of you. sorry.

thanks,

Keep it, would be my advice.

I would keep the knife as well. I have only had the BG-42 versions, but I am going to have try and get a S30V version as well.

thanks for the feedback all. i think i am going to keep the bg42 sebenza. seems like they are hard to come by. this will be the start of a great collection of CRKs, lol

thanks,
