So, I'm looking hard at getting my hands on either one of these knives. Aside from scale material which isn't a major issue for me, what are the differences between the two steels? How do they compare to the more common S30V? If there's any Millie owners out there who feel like sounding off, I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

I think most people wouldn't find that much of a noticable difference in the performance of these steels unless they paid very close attention. This is just based on what I've read about these, I have no first hand experience.

I have both the BG-42 and The CPM D2 versions of the Millie, 1. I love them both because well I am a Millie Guy! 2. Cost BG-42 cost me about $170.00 and the D2 cost me $118.00, I think the CPM D2 is good steel, was the sharpest knife I have ever had out of the Box. Also the foliage green slabs look great. So if you want a good knife with good steel that looks damn good then the D2 version will fit the bill. For me though, I am glad I have both versions and plan on getting a new S30V version and any other steel (Sprint Runs) Spyderco comes out with.

The D2 isn't stainless, but it is pretty close. I haven't had any rust spots appear on mine yet.

If I need to sharpen the D2 and BG-42 Millies on the same day (it happens), I have to remember to sharpen the BG first. It sharpens so much easier than the D2 that I would probably remove half the blade before I realized it if I did the D2 first.

The D2 seems to hold its edge a little better than the BG in my use, but I am the first to admit my use is not what others call normal.

Overall, I'd say you can't go wrong with either one.
