Has anyone done any heat treatment of BG-42 at home and what time and temp. setting work best?

Hey Spike,

I do mostly BG 42, but use a salt bath at 2050 F. Soaktimes are 30 min, once part has reached temp. Quench in air, oil or salt at 400 F. Temper 2 hr at 400 F, cryogenic treatment, second temper at 375 F, RC should be around 62 - 63

Recommend in regular furnace, part wraped: 1980 F, soaktimes min 1 hr, after part has reached temp. Same quench, same temper. RC should be around 59 - 61.
On a average, for every 50 degree F lower, one has to increase soaktimes roughly by double original time.

But this does not mean that one can crank temp up, to speed things up, as undesirable grain growth results from doing so.

Part has reached temperature, means: On a average it takes the chromium molecules in the matrix of the steel between 5 - 8 min to reach temperature, and then actuall soak times starts.

Recommend to use a reputable heat treater, for your high alloy steels. No hit and miss heat treating then.

High Performance Steel, needs optimum heat treating to be high performance steel.

Hope this helps.

Thomas
