BG42 vs S30V

The problem I have with S30v is that the edge is difficult to knock off when resharpening. Even light strokes on the Sharpmaker with the white stones, that edge will go back and forth forever. Sropping it on leather with green compound , for me, hasn't worked. I have tried applying the green compound to a piece of hard maple and using it as a strop. ( That's one nice aspect of s30V--its tough wearing once you do get it sharp.) But for me, I've pretty much had it with S30V. I'd like to try the new CPM154 on a Sebenza;)

Man CPM154 is a much older steel than S30V ...

There's a new formulation. Many custom makers are trying it now with excellent results, fyi.

the proper heat treatment of a good quality steel is just as critical to blade performance. I would rather have a properly heat treated blade of 440C as one of the newer steels with improper heat treatment. I have several custom knives that perform better with 440C blades than any I have with S30V OR 154CM.

I also have a Microtech LCC in S30V that holds and takes a fine edge better than my Sebenza.

S30V is the only blade material I own that I cannot sharpen worth a damn. The Buck 110 custom in BG-42 sharpens quick and surgical scary sharp easily with the sharpmaker.

The sebbie will barely cut hair of my arm. other blades pop it off like magic.

Im not so good with S30V I guess.

It is propably harder to sharpen S30V, however well sharpened it will maintain edge longer.
I own a few blades made out of S30V and sharpen it to a scarry razorr shaving sharrp ;)

Adam, the "new steel" is CPM154 . This is basically the same chemistry of 154CM but made with Crucibles CPM method. So far it shows excellent promise. Search CPM154 on the 'Makers' section for comments.

Colt/S&W, Ford/Chevy , BG42/SV30.?????? Whatever happened to good ole' 35?? The new kid???

It is interesting to read all the comments regarding difficulty sharpening S30V, as ease of sharpening is one of the supposed advantages of S35VN.

Small Reg. BG-42/Lg Reg. BG-42/ Zaan S30. Love them all and I do thing S30 is easier to sharpen but with the Wicked Edge the BG 42 is really no problem. I have never done a test to see which holds and edge longer. Both are good to me.

I've never tried BG42 .Has anyone compared S35VN with BG42 and S30V ? I like S35VN over S30V .
Remember that our knife use is small compared to other uses so we can't expect mills to make a steel just for us. We're very fortunate to have such fine steels to use. Remember that the CPM process has been around from about 1970 !! I wonder if the knife makers who used it then are still making them ?

Nothing. It wasn't around eight years ago when the thread was started :p

BG-42 is my favorite overall steel for a folder, so I do prefer it in my favorite folders(Sebenza). My second favorite modern design is the Military, and I carry one of those with BG-42 too.

I wish that CRK would make a Sebenza with M390. Could you imagine???
I think the Domestic equivalent cpm-20cv would be very popular.S35VN is good stuff, but I don't consider it more than a bump up from S30V. S35vn seems to sharpen just a tad quicker than S30v and I cant discern any performance differences. I have used BG42, S30V, and S35VN and ease of sharpening has never ever been an issue. They are all great steels for my uses, but I could imagine that 20CV would be quite desirable on a folder by some users.
