Guys,
A thought has struck me to try treating cotton balls with bacon grease as an alternative to petroleum jelly. Advantages would be that besides being a fire starter, the scent would make it useful as bait for a trap & shaped to look like a grub, it would make a good fishing lure. Quest now is to find some real bacon instead of that stuff they sell in supermarkets.

While I do really LOVE bacon, I don't really want my kit to be bacon scented. The animal fat would also go rancid pretty quick. But, it would be a neat experiment in bear country:)

Would it burn? Oh yeah, but the other factors do dissuade me.

I don't know how things are in your neck of the woods, but, around here, that would be a bad idea. I don't want to attract bears, lions, feral dogs and feral hogs to my camp and my pack. I don't want rodents, corvids, etc., chewing through my pack and gear, either.

(And it's going to get yucky, in time.)

One word...RANCID. I'll stick with the VCB's.

I see your thought process here, your mind is in the right place, and I am all for thinking outside the box, and commend you for doing so.

However I think the bad outweighs the good with this one.

Makes me think. Will natural peanut butter burn? I always seem to have some when Im in the woods.

I a pinch I think it would be a good idea, but like everyone else. I could see being stalked be the local wildlife.

Yep, I agree with the others who have commented - I see no advantages to using bacon grease over petroleum jelly, and there seem to be a number of clear disadvantages, including the smell and the possibility of your fire aids going rancid.

The idea of carrying multi-purpose scented bait for traps or fishing lures in a PSK is interesting, and not something that one comes across too often. If you decide to try this out, Uplander, please be sure to take some pics and let us know how it works.

Personally - and this has a lot to do with where I hike - I try to ensure that anything that I carry that smells like food is in my bear bag, safely cached.

All the best,

- Mike

2 points... Real bacon is cured with smoke & salt & lasts a long time out of the fridge. I've known of grease lasting for a year in a hunting cabin pantry without seeming to turn rancid. If used successfully as bait, there'll be the aroma of fire grilled whatever wafting thru the forest anyway.
Long term I'm not going to replace the PJC in my gear with BGC, just thinking of adding some for specific times.
Keep the comments coming.
