Hello Cliff,

I'm just learning about khukuris and have benefitted greatly from reading your reviews, linked to both the Himalayan Imports and Gurkha House websites -- thanks much for your time, dedication, and enthusiasm.

A question popped up for me after reading your 4-way "face-off" ( HI 15.5" Ang Khola, GH Service #1, MD TUSK, and Uluchet), and your brief appraisal of the GH Bhojpure on the GH website. Namely, how would the Bhojpure measure up to the Ang Khola? Although the former (as listed) is bigger by about .5" OAL and 70 g (2.5 oz), it sounds more fairly comparable to the HI AK you tested than the Service #1, no?

In your brief appraisal, the Bhojpure's strengths appear to address the Service #1's shortcomings as compared to the AK. (NB: I mean "shortcomings" in relative terms: as a mil. issue khukuri, no doubt it has proven its worth in a variety of real-life contexts -- so no slight intended against Gurkha House.) Although the Bhojpure wasn't in the comparison test, could you give a general sense of its quality and performance vis-a-vis the Ang Khola? You seem impressed by the quality of its fit/finish and durability of its assembly (the buttcap, at least, survived a round of your Ultimate Fighting Championship). In relation to the Ang Khola, could you elaborate on its edge-holding/maintenenance, and perhaps its overall quality and performance after more extended use?

Apologies to all for the longwinded question, and for any apparent exclusiveness -- Cliff did the testing, but I'd most certainly appreciate comments from any and all else who can further illuminate these issues. Thanks --

Glen

Sure :

compares the Bhojpure in some detail with several other knives.

As to what the results mean - generally I don't discuss this in a lot of detail unless there is a gross failure as a lot of the suitability of a knife varies with the needs and viewpoint of the individual so that is something you have to decide for yourself.

For example during the time when I was evaluating the Bhojpure I got a lend of a Bolo from my brother that he had owned for about a year and was satisfied with its performance. The steel was 440A and I figured that it would be an interesting comparison. It broke almost immediately when I smacked it off of the Bhojpure (I was splitting a pice of wood).

I considered the blade to have failed - but my brother considered that my common sense had failed. He was none to happy so I promised him that if he could break my Battle Mistress (under normal use - which I have a fairly broad defination of) I would buy him a Basic. I plan to give him one anyway as a replacement, but he will be a bit harder on the BM if I don't tell him that.

Thanks for your comments, and my apologies for not scrolling through the prior threads! (So much traffic builds up so quickly, it all becomes a bit overwhelming if you can't check in daily!)

As others, I much appreciate your thoughtfully balanced, well-detailed, and discriminating tests -- a kind of heavyweight consumer reports for edged tools which use clear, explanatory prose (peppered w/good anecdotes and some humor, too) for luddites like me. You neither speak down to nor speak over your readers -- a lot harder than it looks, esp. on the net. So once again, thanks --

Thanks from me too, Cliff. Your unbiased testing and straight-talking reviews are refreshing.
