Bic Mods

I was out in the woods today trompin around and it was pissing rain and snow so I decided to try using some of the orange duct tape that is wrapped around my bic to start a fire. Turns out it burns like CRAZY. A 1" x 1.5" square burned for about 30-45 seconds. Just thought I would share that little tidbit.:) Chai it, you'll like it.

LONG LIVE DUCT TAPE!

Great ideas all around. Another trick I found on line is to take a safety pin and duct tape that to the body of the lighter with the bottom hinge/eye sticking out for a lanyard mount. A paper clip would do the job too, but not as handy as a safety pin (sliver needle, hold your pants up, fish hook, etc, etc). I would wrap a couple feet of duct tape on the lighter body first and finish up with scalpel blade, alumimum foil and safety pin.

The duct tape fire starter is a great discovery-- on a par with hand sanitzer gel for "flammables I carry anyway." I've heard 100% DEET bug juice will flame up easy too.

Instead of a rubber gasket, I use one of those tiny zipties to lock my lighter.

You position the ziptie so the head is wedged in underneath the button, then tighten it as much as you can. Cut off the excess length. To unlock the lighter, you slide the head of the ziptie to one side, so it is no longer wedged into that space. The narrow body of the ziptie allows the lighter to activate, and also decreases the gas output so your fuel will last longer.

I have seen the same Duck brand Blaze Orange duct tape at Michael's (the craft store) if you can't find it at Wally World.

BTW, thanks for sharing the pics, etc. Looks like great ideas.

I might suggest writing a date on the outside, as flint reduces to a powder over time.

I like your mods very much!

.

I have always used orange Bics for their visibility, but I recently discovered that if I use yellow, I can hold the lighter up to the sky and see the fuel level.
The yellow is also pretty high-vis.

Is another name for water witching "dowsing"? I remember my neighbour did it when he built his house a long time ago, for his well, and it worked.
Great idea, BTW! I have some dental floss, needles, fishing line and hooks in mine now, too. Many good possibilities. You could probably even put in some water purifying tablets in as well, the bumps have the added benefit of giving a tactical grip!:D

Looks great, Eric, but the doll would take up too much room in my PSK.

Thinking about the waterproofing I wonder if the vacuum packaging thingy from another thread would work for this???

On those basic mods to the Bic lighter, good ideas and good photos. Thanks.

Now, if you are going to add a tiny blade and a needle, why not include a couple of small fish hooks and a few feet of line? I firmly believe small fish are the most plentiful and easiest to catch, so I favor #8 hooks (Eagle Claw brand preferably) and monofilament line from 6 to 12 pound test. It you will be trying for salt water fish or other toothy species, you should add a short wire leader from 6 to 12 inches long to your hooks ahead of time.

Finally, I'm waiting for someone (else) to suggest packing a Kotex Maxi soaked with petroleum jelly to help you start your campfire in nasty weather. :D

Neat idea! Anyone have a problem with the valve leaking on a lighter? Had one put away in my hunting pack, unopened in the original packaging and it was ok. One that was used a little seemed to leak and over a period of time the gas was gone.
