So what disposable lighter is more well built? Bic or Scripto? I recently bought a 7 pack of scripto lighters and was thinking about this.

Also does anyone have any stories of disposable lighters breaking or such?

Thanks

They're disposable, use it till it dies then throw it away.

Im not a smoker but a lighter does come in handy and I was given a big bag of scriptos a couple years ago and none of them have ever failed to work, they're cheaper so if I was to buy lighters I'd buy scriptos from the dollar store.

Now for stories, it actually pertains to this bag of lighters.

I set the bag of lighters on the work bench and forgot about them as I was in the garage working when they were brought over , well I turned on the bench grinder and the wire wheel caught the bag sending them all flying exploding and couple dozen of them.

Somehow a the other 30+ of them were fine.

Bic is better built. I like the Scriptos because they have an adjustable flame that can be hacked to shoot much higher. But I've had one fall apart on me. Something broke at the top of it and the flint shot out and was lost forever. In comparison, I've picked up many Bics that were lost or discarded in the dirt, rusted & packed with grit. As long as they still have fuel, they always work.

Bics are damn durable, in my experience they're always lost long before they run out of fluid or break.

Definitely, find a Bic in the street and it probably works unless it's out og fluid.
A scripto found in the street is probably broken.

If you just need something laying on the work bench or in a tool box...ect then it probably doesn't matter though.

My mom and grandmother are smokers, Bic is their go-to and has been for years.

Don't know much about them, but I had a Bic that I tossed in my truck bag and it sat there for 12 years of below zero winters and hot summers and when I pulled it out it lit on the first flick.

Years ago (like 40) my mom had left a Bic near the woodstove. It blew up after sitting there for a while. Nobody was hurt but it was LOUD.

I have found the Bics (large size) to be more durable and dependable. I haven't bought any Scripto lighters in a couple years and only buy them in a pinch (basically need and that's all that is available). I use lighters all the time since I smoke a pipe.

What about Cricket lighters though? Now this isn’t such a straight forward easy question now is it?

Or Djeep...I always liked those ;). Kind of the same footprint of a Zippo, good in the coin pocket.

I find Cricket lighters about the same as Scripto. They are slightly better than your standard cheapo adjustable flame clear lighters and better feeling. I find Bics a cut above these with their classic rugged build and almost collectible designs. Want to be a bit fancier, there's always Clipper too. But me, I use Zippo which are great except they need to constantly be refilled.

So with my pack of Scripto which is now gone because I just threw them on the ground to make them explode. I found the heads of the lighters loosened up. And on a few of them almost wanted to come off. I will stick with Bic.

The reason I only asked about Bis and Scripto is because they are the lighters I always see. Bic is avaliable at every gas station I go to and Scripto at walmart.

I just looked at the disposable lighters I have in my organizer. I used to smoke cigarettes, and use them for Cigars in the winter... they also come in handy to melt nylon loose threads opn bags/clothing or cut nylon straps. I just pick up what's available at the gas station or 7-eleven when I need one. Interestingly enough, none of them are Scripto or Bic, although I don't know if the brands stamped on them use one or the other company.

Personally, I like the clear adjustable ones to both see how much fluid is left, and to adjust the flame height when needed. You can also take them apart to adjust the flame even higher. This can be beneficial for, example needing a higher flame to go over the side of a pipe. I know the lighter fluid taste might ruin the tobacco flavor though.

On the flip side, I have small, white Bic lighters in my tool box, emergency kits, and sometimes in my EDC pouch (when I'm not carrying my cigar lighter). Of the colored lighters, the white is easier to see the fluid level in (after I take off the sticker).

I have had the adjustable lighters go bad from long term storage... say 15 years. I haven't tested the longevity of the Bics. Occasionally, some sort of corrosion will cause issues with the wheel working.... although I don't remember/know if it was a lead issue. This doesn't happen all the time, but out of probably 20-30 different disposable adjustable lighters I've had over the years, I remember maybe 3 or 4 having this issue. It was usually a lighter that I used a couple times, put away, then a few years later find it in an organizer drawer and check to see if it works. Overall, the adjustable lighters seem easier to damage.
