Bidder ID's

There's been some talk about how that infamous on-line auction site has changed their method of id'ing bidders. This creates a couple of problems.

No. 1, we have no way of knowing if someone is just inflating the price of a buddies merchandise (I'm not sure we could really tell that any way).

No. 2, we have no way of knowing when we're stepping on the toes of a fellow Buck collector.

No. 3, being fairly isolated, I have no place else to watch for collectible, or hard to find models, which means that without that site, I have no reliable way to feed my addiction.

I did check on a 319, that I have bid on, without logging in to the site and find that my ID is r***t. Well, my old handle was rudderjt, so could it be that the code isn't as hard to figure out as we think? The r and the t would be the first and last letters of my old ID. Any one else notice this or is this just a coincidence on my part?

I can't remember how my name now shows on Ebay. I do know that it did not in any way look like 2tonyb.

Didn't know you started a new thread, so I'll jump this over from the old thread.

Hmmm. I just checked a 319 that I bid on, without logging in, and I find my new ID is r***t. Well, my old ID was rudderjt, so could it be first and last letters, or is that a coincidence on my part? Any one else notice this?

It's not first and last letters for me, my username is "borangzen", but my hidden bidder thing is always "b***g".

If folks want to start chekcking to see if theirs is consistent and want to make an updated list for us here, I will be glad to maintain the list and keep it posted.

Next few things you bid on, look at the auction without logging in, and see if your hidden bidder name is always the same.

There's more than one way to skin an Ebay cat! :D

If you want a knife bad enough, bid on it.

We all have over bid each other a few times and I don't think anyone has come to blows or hard feelings. Maybe some disappointments but nothing that lingers long.

There will usually be another one come along at some point, unless it is a rare one. And in that case its a "sorry about that" kind of thing if I should win. And again, no hard feelings if you should win.

So did I feel guilty about snagging a Kaala for $40 shipped, knowing that some of you might have been bidding it also. Nope,,,because there are a lot of them showing up in the general same price range. just as an example.

So we may just have to put on our big boy jockey jr's and hope no one gets hurt feelings.

Far as I am concerned, if you want it, go for it !

now I am off to buy some big boy jockey jr's....

I agree with Pack Rat....and it is actually exciting to see some of the auctions
knowing that some Buck brother won the item.

If I am looking for a knife to fill my collection I will bid on it .

Good points, I wasn't so much worried about folks getting mad, as we inadvertently drive the prices higher on each other, but that probably is just as likely as if it's not one of us also????

Unfortunately, I don't see a way around it unless there is some rhyme or reason to the new ebay naming conventions.

Maybe we will figure it out.

In reality, I agree with all you guys. I hate to take something away from a Buck brother, but by the same token, I'm sure I've lost some to other Buck collectors. Hard feelings? Nope! Luck of the draw. Hard feelings? None here! Save a few bucks? That's always nice, but I try to bid early, bid what I think I can afford, and usually leave it at that. Once in awhile I'll up the ante during the bidding, but rarely, almost never, snipe at the last minute. I've certainly lost a bunch of them in the last minute and that's a good thing. If I got all that I bid on, I wouldn't be able to bid as often. I agree that is part of the fun.

On the other hand, I did enjoy seeing handles that I recognized from the forum pop up now and then, though. I guess that was a way of keeping track of each other.

I, too, would be willing to help compile a list, and thanks to Bear Claw for mentioning it, if any one thinks it would make a difference. Perhaps, just being happy about a successful auction and sharing that happiness on the forum is all we need to worry about.

I'm ALFABB (That means I'm Always Looking For A Buck Bargain)

Hi All,

If you do a search you will find an old thread with a list just like you are talking about. We were told by the forum god's to stop doing that as it was a violation here. It was in-line with posting links to live auctions...but in reverse.

I also agree with Ron and Larry...but try to not bid on my Pal's....some times though you have to fill a hole in your collection. I also hope no hard feelings were or are felt.

However, I did and do take exception to folks who buy up everything just to re-sell it for a profit....well that's just to bad for me because all on-line auctions are set up as free enterprise and I can participate or not ...it's my choice (I don't like Bill Gates; But, love his products...a little different...I know...but.....you get the point).

The only thing that I don't like about this new system is that it makes it much easer for the cheaters to start plying their trade. Let's face it some folks are just dishonest and will do what ever they can get away with. I don't like it that I can't see that the price is getting driven up by a bidder with no history (shill)....In addition, I used to take a look at someone's bidding history who was bidding against me as I could often tell how much they may be willing to bid based off their bidding history; it was just a tool I used often.

That's what I was thinking, so far it has been consistent for mine, it's always the same "b***g", so if that pattern holds, and everyone has the same hidden name each time, we could add those to a list.

Might work.

Where?

I read those old threads to check the list before bidding frequently, and there isn't anything in them about it??

Hi BCCL,

I spent about an hour trying to find that thread....it's out there I just can't locate it.

I had been posting links to live auctions....I had been doing it from the start of my joining the group and did not know it was a No No. When the MOD told me to stop or possibly get banned...he also stated that a list of auction handles and an agreement not to bid against each other was "wrong on so many levels"!!!!....I got the point at the time. Sorry I can't find that thread.

However, It is out there. Perhaps you should ask the Mod's directly if it would be OK to do this. If they give you the thumbs up I'm in all the way.

I get a kick out of seeing Decaffe buy a non 110 :D:D

:foot: WHAT?!!
i only collect 110's !!!
well some times i slip in a fixed blade but
i am not addicted to them!!!
i have an embarrseingly tiney 124 collection
a pig sticker,
now i gave Joe the two 120's to customize for
fund raseing to help haebbie get over here they will be listed on ebay soon..
i have a expermantal protype 119 with coa i may keep
((if i have enught for my own ticket to post falls..))
bucksway has gotton most all my 112's with reserves on the rest...
so i am beeing watched!!! hummmmm

as to the thought of this post...
IMHO
if you see it BID on it !!!
if you have friends you realy dont want to bid agenst you can still track them..here is how it is done
go to advance surch.. on the left side click find items by bidder..
type in 334 dave and you can see EvErYtHiNg i have did on or
won in the last 30 days...
all you have to do is type in any ones nick on ebay and
you can follow them ...
i used to bid on any thing buck...some her erember thoes days!
then noticed i was looseing bids a LOT ...
some one here found i was being tracked and let me in on it!
so i pay for a snipe program now,,,
if i am bidding on some thing you can be assured my bid is LOW for what it is worth and that i dont expect to win at that bid...
but be it know i only do that when i have a full watch list and i may still snipe it!!! no mercy!!
so bid and feel good if you win!!!

Well, as far as I'm concerned, it's a dead issue. I'll bid when I can, be happy when I get one, and wish the rest of you all the best of luck.

Just to change the subject, I was able to get my hands on a Camilus stockman, the equivalent of the Buck 303, today. Not to buy, but to handle and compare to my Camilus contract 303. Yup, look like litter mates, except for the handle material and tang stamps.

This is my take also... It only saves me money when I'm outbid ;)

BUT I hate seeing a knife sell cheap (that I would appreciate) and then the same knife gets relisted the following week for X amount more. I am in this for collecting not for greed.
SO in saying that, there was only 3 BCCI members that I would knowingly bid against, (Not all BCCI members are BBBF - Best Buck Brothers Forever ;))
the rest I would never even consider outbidding... To each his own I guess

That point is now moot though, and with the possible shilling I dont frequent the bay much...
