Big Bend, A Ganga Ram & Fred

Talk about isolated…..Fred hadn’t been to town in seven months!! But the view he had from his trailer on the ridgeline was incredible.…..Plus he had the only cold beer and coffee for seventy miles.
The more I think about this post, the more I want to live like Fred when I grow up :D .

I swear Berkley, for someone who didn't have TV or radio, Fred stayed pretty in tune with life just by talking with the people who came in to camp or take out of the river. Before he came out to La Linda he copied hundreds of movies and tunes onto cds. So he's got stuff to watch or listen to if he feels like it and some of it is some pretty good stuff from the early to mid 70's. He just sits up there in the trailer, goes exploring cave shelters and mounds whenever he feels like it. If gets to hot out on the ridge, he'll grab a 12 pack and find a rock shelter that's nice and cool.

While we were walking around, he spotted a baby horny toad. The thing was no bigger than a silver dollar......and he spotted it right off. He was giddy as a kid finding that horny toad!! Simple things somtimes are the best.

I used to have a biology teacher Dr Robert Deal and he would get so excited when you brought a bug or unusual plant for him to identify. He was the best teacher I ever had because he had such enthusiasim for the subject and managed to draw most of us in with him. Every now and then he would go out with us in Dendrology class. The Forestry teachers used to be real hard asses by running us up and down the hills to see trees and making us so worn out that it was hard to follow them. On the other hand when you were led by Dr Deal he would often go from one tree to the next on the same flat or hillside and you learned so much more. He was interested in teaching you about trees, not engaging in some sort of macho bullshit.
