Big blade bushcraft techniques?

Another +1 for wider blades .

On my regular machete I used a baton that had a nail in it I didnt see .
It messed up the front 1/3 of my blade on the top edge . Every time I go to shave / plane some wood I feel that ... but if the blade wasnt so wide I wouldnt be using it like that , I couldnt grip it safely .

I feel the machete is an often overlooked, inexpensive alternative to high dollar mega-buck blades. Many have knives with 9-10"+ blades, yet scoff at a machete with a 12" blade. I just recently took my Ontario 12" machete & modified it with a Dremel tool. I am still not done with it. I made a big 2 finger choil, modified/removed the D-handle & jimped the top. I will also be using the sanding drum to make a spot about 4" long with a sharp 90* edge for firesteel sparking. $21 for the machete & just my time for the mods. VERY functional now.
