I was in the market for a big blade purchase. I don't usually buy fixed blades but kinda thought what the hell when I saw this one.

Ontario Spec Plus Marine Raider for $44.95. Sharpened to 58-59 HRC with a cordura sheath and 1095 carbon steel. Looks like it will be a durable chopper type "camp" knife.

Just curious?? Anyone own or use one of these? The price seemed right and it should be good for the "zombies" (joke...OK?)

Anyhow, if you own or use one let me know.

I've almost bought one of these a few times. Lots of youtube reviews and tests. I know a guy with one and it feels great. I don't think anything from Ontario will let you down.

However with the grind on the blade, the large clip point, and the guard I think you can find a better large camp knife, though most are going to be about twice as much. I love my BK9 and RTAK II and really want a RD9 but those are $80-$100 knives. Just got in a Condor Hudson Bay knife which is a little less than the SP10 but looks like the edge needs to be thinned out and there's no lanyard hole. I think the Condor Kumunga is about $30-$40 and it has positive reviews but the Rodan I just got (basically a 5" kumunga) has a similar funky thick grind as the HBK but it is a thinner blade.

So you want a large chopper camp knife. What tasks do you think you'll need if for besides chopping? What's your budget?

Bigghoss,

I don't really NEED it for anything in particular. I just saw it and it seemed a "decent" price for the knife. I had been thinking about buying a large type fixed blade for a while, and did not have a lot of $$$ to spend.

I thought it might be a good knife to go camping or hunting with. Not really a skinner but might help with cutting thru some bone (if some "hacking" was needed).

To be real honest, I did not really know anything about this knife. I'll come clean and admit, it more or less was an impulse buy.

Oh I misunderstood, I didn't realize you already bought it. Well no worries it should do well for you.
