Big camping knife for a friend

There are a lot of great options. The Becker series of Ka-Bar have a lot of beasts for this role, as do ESEE. Condor have quite a few big choppy blades too. The Joker Nomad or the Cudeman 125MC are both Spanish made knives that are good well suited as big camp knives.

ESEE Junglas is way too pricey, BK-9 is also a bit too expensive.
But I guess everything got solved.

Long story short, I wanted to lay off this decision and just get a SAK, saw and a water bottle, but SP-53 was in my cart instead of water bottle and at this point I'll just slide with it.

I hope I won't regret this... this is what I get for browsing and buying knives at work 😅

It's a big choppy beast. I'd probably put at least 1-2 layers of hockey tape on the handle, to improve the grip and take a bit of the shock out of swinging it for a while.

That's almost 1kg of 5160 steel. It's big, it's thick, it's heavy and it'll be hard to stop once it gets going.

And thanks for tip. I also imagine that their kraton might be a little rough or that ridges could create hotspots after swinging that chunk of steel for a while, especially when hitting hard wood.

I guess I'll get myself some hockey or racket tape right away too.

I also looked up reviews on this thing, and majority of people love it and say that it's a monster of a blade that sends chunks of wood flying. If that's true - I'll be very excited.

The SP-53 is a good choice, I am betting you will happy with it.
Thank you.

Long and heavy blade is exactly what I wanted. And looking at reviews - everyone says that handle is comfortable and locks your hand in place nicely.

This knife won't break the bank, 5160 is tough, edge retention is not my main concern so it won't be an issue, and sharpening this should be really easy. That would make it a good outdoor blade.

I like the shape of blade too, forward heavy, but still with sharp and pointy tip.

And also, Ontario is apparently connected with US millitary so I guess they are doing something right then.
