Hello all,
I'm new to this sight and I'm hoping you can give me some suggestions for a new big chopping knife (and search is down for non-paying members).
I've been using a BK&T 9 Combat Bowie, but I'd like a little more chopping power when I'm backpack camping. 10" blade is my new minimum, and Ideally I'd like it to come with a sheath.

So far I've looked at:
-Busse FFBM (sweet, hard to find and very pricey)
-Ontario Randall RTAK 2 Knife Micarta Handle 10.25" Blade
-Scrap Yard Dog Father LE

Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Depends on your budget. I see you have a BM next to 130 dollar knives so it's hard to gauge what you really want to spend. I'd say unless your making an investment or collecting, then go with the cheaper of the 3. If your looking for cheaper than that the Kershaw Outkast is a incredible chopper for the money. Honestly it has done everything my more expensive knives can do as well, just not as fast as my heavier ones.

Hard to beat a Ranger RD9, The Dogfather or even the RTAK2 (I would chose the other 2 over the RTAK, soley based on the thickness and consistency of the temper) Those knives will do what you need. On a pricier scale, my Fehrman Extreme Judgment is a beast and a beautiful knife, it will out live you. IMO if you want Busse performance in a smaller price tag go with the Fehrman.

How much do you want to spend??

Bill Siegle makes a MEAN chopper

Justin of RANGER Knives also makes an EXCELLENT chopper(RD-9) for less than $120.00

You have a A LOT of choices---depends on your price range

Let US know what you get

Tramontina machete. Harbor Freight belt sander to put an edge on it. Less than $50. And if you ever manage to lose it, you won't cry.

Do you plan on assaulting people? Do you think you will be attacked by ninjas? Are you going to have to kill a grizzly bear? If not then why buy a combat knife? If you seriously want a good all around camp chore knife to handle chopping chores and don't want to go with a short axe or hatchet I would suggest a Woodman's Pal. These are made for just what you described, they also worked so well in survival scenarios the US military (designated the LC-14-B) has issued them from WWII through Desert Storm, devoting no less than 4 manuals to their usage, including their use as a combat weapon. It is also standard equipment for smoke jumpers, fire fighters, foresters, etc. I have had mine since I joined the military and it served me here and in Germany for over 25 years. I cannot think of a better chopping tool, and it serves as a great emergency shovel as well. And even with you go with the most expensive model, leather sheath, and round sharpening stone (makes touching up the hood easy) you are still under $150.00. Add a SAK or similar knife and you will have all the blades you need for an extended stay in the woods....or jungle, or swamp, or desert.

try a cheaper than dirt - rough use knife for $10 you can see on knifetests they are not bad at all.....

First Off--- Welcome to the Forum!!:D
The Browning Crowell competition cutter is a great chopper for a good price. They can be had new for 115.-130. on the net. Used I see them for 100. or so every now and then. It is a solid, well designed cutter, designed by a couple of men that know their stuff. It comes with a nice leather sheath with stud and frog/beltloop. I got this one used for under 100 and it is an awesome knife for the money!!:D

Kukri or Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works Bowie, big, bad, and screames use me. I have also been using a Western 49 carbon steel bowie that I abuse. I feel bad about that one because it takes a scary sharp edge so quickly and keeps on ticking. Regards, Loosearrow

A simple Nepalese kukri will out chop them. Preferable size around 15" inches in blade length, that is if your not adverse to carrying such a large knife.

Don't think I've seen it mentioned, but Swamp Rat's Battle Rat should not be overlooked; it handles very well for a 9.5 inch blade, weighs 18 oz., and are about as indestructible as it gets: make no mistake, it is a chopper! I've never used one, but given your parameters I'd give the recommendation for the Woodsman's Pal serious consideration. May not be the most "glamorous" choice, but seems very versatile and undoubtedly quite a chopper- made in the US as well :)
