Big Chris Custom Caper in S90V

Great read. Best thread I've read in awhile.

You end up trying out the Rodent Trail?

Rodent Trail has been good so far. I worked the factory edge off quickly. I sharpened it up with the WS. Have yet to use it on another on animal.

Update Cleaned a hog last night 165lb boar that a friend shot. Used the caper for 75% of it and had a long discussion with my friend regarding grinds, steel and sharpeners. He used a smith & Wesson caper of unknown steel and an Outdoor Edge set I assumed was AUS 8. Both of which he had to sharpen numerous times to keep up with the Big Chris. As my caper did most of the heavy lifting it is finally at a point it will not shave arm hair. So total animals quartered since I received the blade from Chris without a single touchup and only cleaning with soap and water. 2 Buck deer - quartered, 1 boar hog 165 lbs 75% of the work - quartered, & 1 sow 125lb 30% of the work- quartered. I plan on stropping it back to shaving sharp.

The blade still cuts very aggressively and I am confident I could clean one more animal hog or deer with it easily. The goal is to see how easily I can bring it back to shaving sharp and determine how many animals I could go through before losing the shaving edge.

Very nice write up, review and thoughts.

My advice with regards to stropping...skip it. Give the S90V a nice fresh aggressive edge exposing those carbides. For me when hunting I have found stropping a 'dull or damaged' edge back to shaving sharpness I saw a reduction in performance.

Your mileage may vary.

I am split on the stropping back to shaving.
I use an "aggressive" 600 grit SC compound for stropping. It will give a dull-shiny finish while retaining an aggressive cut. BUT, after multiple stropping sessions the steel does benefit from a few swipes on a stone to re-apex the edge to regain that very aggressive cut S90V is known for. I do know though that mileage will vary depending on compounds used.

I am anxious to see the results you get though.

Putting the caper and another BC blade I picked up to work. Now I will have a nice pumpkin patina on the O1 blade.

I tried stropping it back to sharp with green compound on leather. No luck. I then took it to the worksharp and a few passes at 220 then 10 at 6000 and it shaves hair again. Love that blade.
The other blade is in O1 I picked up on the forum and love it. Chris really does great work on his handles. I can't say enough about them. Now I am waiting to see the pumpkin patina on the O1 blade.

tore the ligament in my right thumb..... may need to make adjustments to the handle. FYSA I have used the caper to clean another 12 deer and hogs over the past few years. Been busy with a new place building fence and getting it ready to hunt.

Sorry about the thumb injury.
I am pleased to hear that you are still getting use from the knife.
Thanks

This thread is only from 3 years back? Eeeeek! Time goes quick...love this thread.

So I bought a place to hunt and if I get the buck I am after look for pics of the caper in use very soon.

Man, it's getting close again isn't it??!!! Good luck to you, I hope you get the one you want

There were so many good pictures in here RWT. If you get to where you want to try to fix them, you can edit them with the suffix '~original' and they should show back up in their original size. At least until/unless photobucket dumps that fix on us. Shoot straight brother!!

I will fix the pics soon. I haven't been on here in a long time. There have certainly been some changes. I've been busy with changing jobs and getting my new place up an running. I kept track and I have killed 45+ hogs since I bought the place in July of 2015. Still using the same EDC and have works it hard

So I got the one I was after this weekend. Now I need to figure out how to post pics again.

A little teaser this deer has a split G3 and a triple split G2.
