Big Chris EDC CPM M4 short review with some rope cutting "Pic Heavy"

Very nice review. I'm happy to say I have one of these knives, only difference is the handle color. Nice work, Chris!

Chris, are the two 3v blades at different hardness?

One has dry ice cryo and the other does not. I wanted to do "my own" test to see if and how big the difference is. It is also a total blind test. Unless Jim opened the envelope early he has no idea which is which. I could tell a small difference when finishing the knives, but my wife holds the key here and will not tell me the results either till Jim is done.

That is very interesting information Chris. I can't wait to see the result.

Wow! I'm really looking forward to the results of those knives.

It's refreshing for the end-user to be able to compare more steels without it being such an apple/orange comparison. Nearly identical geometries will help us make more informed decisions. Bravo Chris!

BTW, I still love that S90V blade you made for me! Fantastic!

That makes sense Chris. I imagine that I'd consider an obtuse bevel if I were selling knives, especially with a warranty. When a customer places an order do you allow for an edge in the 20° range?

Very interesting thread. :)

When working on a custom order I try to match edge geometry to the intended tasks. Yes, if you wanted a 20 degree bevel and understood the limitations of such I would be happy to do it.

That is a sweet distal taper. Looks like it has two different tapers, much slicier than it looks in profile. Very nice grinding.

Yes, it has a nice distal taper to the point, and the swedge really adds to it. Chris knows his blade geometry.

NO, after cutting the cardboard I stopped there. It was back to shaving after about about three minutes on the sharpmaker brown rods. The sharpmaker is great for quick touch ups, without the hassle of soaking stones in water and getting everything ready.

I'm impressed with Big Chris's knives and technical information with his relevant comments in this thread. Very glad I have one of his knives.

Very impressive. Is that the EDC II? Looks like there are different EDCs on Chris's website.

Chris Berry is the Man! He is informative, talented and way too humble. He is crazy enough to work on the nasty super steels and his scales/grips/handles are made to melt into your hand. He down plays it but boy o' boy are his knives sharp. I have a hunter/edc of his in CPM D2 that almost scares me. I also have 10V and M390 knives of his and they are all wonderful.
I hope to get a few more smaller knives from him then I am gonna have a big sale and wipe out most of my folders.
Try one of his knives, you will be singing the same tune I do, once again, Thanks Chris, keep up the great work. Russ

Russ, I agree. I carry this Big Chris M4 EDC in my front pocket all the time. It kicked a lot of my good folders out of my pocket. I just sharpened this blade with a 320 grit S/C stone, it cuts super aggressive while still being able to shave hair. IMO, steels like M4 cut for a long time with a shaving sharp course edge. I'm really liking the results i'm getting from the S/C on high wear steels.

What are you using for a sheath? I have one in m390 with a a belt sheath, looking at a pocket model from sharpshooter or tree stump leather is only 35 miles away and he said he would hook me up. Thanks in advance, Russ

I use the kydex sheath made by Chris, it fits in my front pocket and is low profile.

Great looking knife! That handle looks awesome, and I love the clip. Thanks for sharing the review.
