Big EDC folding knife recomendations?

Hi! I lost my old and trusty Benchmade/HK Nitrous Blitz. I'm in the market for a big EDC folding knife. The primary purpose is self defense when walking and subway'ing around the bad parts of town.

I'm eyeing the Cold Steel Rajah II. Before I go buy the Rajah, does anyone have any recommendations for a folding pocket machete? I would prefer a 6+ inch blade but I'm keeping all options open!

Thanks!

The Spyderco Ulize or Police III are designed with self defense in mind. Both have 4.25 inch blades.

Cold Steel Espada extra large. 7 1/2" blade, pocket clip, pocket deploy thumb plate, blade pops open when you pull it out of your pocket by hooking the plate on your pants pocket. Would make Mic Dundee think twice..

if it's for self defence why not a Spyderco Civilian or Matriarch? those big fully serrated s curved blades are down right dangerous.

How about a Microtech Socom Elite? It's obviously not a 6" knife, but it's got a very nice 4" blade and is much easier to carry.

How is the deployment though? I know my endura takes a bit of force to deploy. Part of the nature of the beast with a lockback. I love everything about the Ulize, except the lock.

Well, given your blade size specifications, Cold Steel is the ONLY way to go. The Rajah II is a great choice, but if weight is an issue, consider the excellent Hold-Out 6-incher. After that, I recommend the Voyager 5.5-incher series. One of the benefits of the other knives (besides weight) is that the Hold-Out and Voyagers are available with serrations, which is a plus in self defense knife. For knives in general, I prefer plain edges, but you should take a look at the old CS Vaquero Grande. It was essentially an extra-large Voyager with a serrated 6-inch blade. I still carry mine and when I've showed it to friends, it always scares the hell out of them! So it has a very large intimidation factor. A rake or two with a serrated blade and a bad guy would be nuts to push a confrontation. Even looking at these knives should cause them to reconsider!

The "new" CS Voyagers w/5.5-inch blades. I love the Tanto and there's
also a clip point (Bowie) that's available.

I agree that I you REALLY want a 6" folder, then Cold Steel might be the only way to go.

HOWEVER

The Spyderco Civilian is one of the scariest looking knives I have ever seen. And you can easily wave it.

The bonus to not having a 6" blade is that the knife is not so big that you can't do anything with it other than scare people (see: Cold Steel Espada XL)

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't Cold Steel Espada not be able to do anything? I just figured there's nothing really wrong (short of concealment, etc...) with a big blade. In the old-old days, people would have preferred a sword over a pocketknife.

Sometimes, I catch myself in West Oakland at night with a laptop and iPad in my backpack. If SHTF, I rather have a pocket machette (i.e. Rajah) than a 3" blade. If my rationale is flawed, feel free to point it out!

How's Spyderco Civilian's deployment?

Again, thanks guys for these suggestions! I'm very tempted to buy 3 knives now (doh, going way over my budget):

1.) My old trust Benchmade/HK Nitrous Blitz. I never handled a knife that deployed more quickly. It's great because it's lightweight, low profile, and fast!
2.) Rajah II for obvious reasons.
3.) Spyderco Civilian. I really like it because it's billed as a knife that any novice can easily take full advantage of (slashing, raking, etc...). I'm decently trained in hand-to-hand combat (Krav Maga for 2-3 years) but I dunno squat about knife fighting. The Civilian is an attractive choice because of that.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the cold steel ti lite. Its not too ahrd on the wallet, and considering that you are looking for a self-defense blade, this one more than suits your purposes.

+1:thumbup: this will surely make the BG think twice. (unless he has a gun)
