Big EDC folding knife recomendations?

If you are after just self protection then this is the way to go

but if you are after a big knife then a benchmade rukus is a good choice

It's not necessarily the blade design and length, as it's what you are comfortable with. You want what feels good in your hand.

But in my opinion, get an Emerson Combat Karambit.

Be very careful. Both Oakland and the larger hellhole, Alameda County (I speak from long experience with both) have bans on knives over 3" in length as described here. If SHTF you could find yourself in serious trouble with your Espada XL, or for that matter, even a Spyderco PPT, at 3-5/32".

I'm surprised no one mentioned the cold steel ti lite. Its not too ahrd on the wallet, and considering that you are looking for a self-defense blade, this one more than suits your purposes.

+1. It's sort of like a folding sword.

Check out the new spyderco szabo. 4.6 inch blade compression lock and lightning strike carbon fiber makes for a sexy big knife.

I have this

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't Cold Steel Espada not be able to do anything? I just figured there's nothing really wrong (short of concealment, etc...) with a big blade. In the old-old days, people would have preferred a sword over a pocketknife.

Sometimes, I catch myself in West Oakland at night with a laptop and iPad in my backpack. If SHTF, I rather have a pocket machette (i.e. Rajah) than a 3" blade. If my rationale is flawed, feel free to point it out!

How's Spyderco Civilian's deployment?

The spyderco civilian's deployment is fantastic. Very fast.

The real problem with an espada XL is that it is un-weildy in a non-self defense situation. You can't exactly open letters or cut zip ties very easily with a sword.

That being said. You could also just carry two knives. If you're only interested in having a SD knife.

Probably not big enough but my rat 1 has always served me well. You realy beat the shit out of them and they just keep going.

I've got a Rajah II & a Large G10 Espada. The Espada has a much thinner handle that makes it considerably more comfortable to carry. With a 5.5" blade it is "legal" to carry here, but I don't much. I put a simple slip-ring on the pocket clip. That makes if easier/quicker to put in & pull out of my pocket.

I carried a Manix 2XL for a while and loved it. Knife was a bit wide for the front pocket though. My current large blade EDC is the ZT560, definitley my favorite so far.

Hi! I lost my old and trusty Benchmade/HK Nitrous Blitz. I'm in the market for a big EDC folding knife. The primary purpose is self defense when walking and subway'ing around the bad parts of town.

I'm eyeing the Cold Steel Rajah II. Before I go buy the Rajah, does anyone have any recommendations for a folding pocket machete? I would prefer a 6+ inch blade but I'm keeping all options open!
The RAJAH 2 is great, look at the ESPADA series too, the XL Espada is a folding sword!! The blade is 7.5", it is less expensive in the (lighter too) new G-10 versions. I carry the Rajah 2, and just now got my SPARTAN!! That is MY EDC knife! I do wish it was .5" shorter, just to stay on the legal side, but hey, I don't do stupid stuff, and I have carried knives over the legal limit and had them handed back to me by police. Seriously, check out the LARGE and EXTRA LARGE ESPADA, The aluminum version is beautiful, but expensive, the G-10 versions are much lighter, and only 10% less strengh, so the XL ESPADA in aluminum holds 600 lbs. The G-10 version, 540 lbs. Not much difference! I am getting the XL G-10 ESPADA.
