Big Expedition - Which knife to choose?

Nick,

Glad you have a SAK -- you're ight, no need for another one.

One thing you haven't been clear on is what conditions and terrain you'll be going into, what equipment you'll be carrying, whether you'll be doing dayhikes or extended stays in the wild, etc.

A 5-inch Busse Basic is a great blade, if I go by my experience with the Basic 9. But it won't handle bushwhacking, etc.

Can you elaborate a little bit on the above?

Thanks,

Brian.

Yep sure Brian:-

We have a 4 day acclimatisation trek followed by a week and a half in the jungle, this is followed by a week of local project work and then another week of rest and recreation. I doubt we will be making paths in the jungle trek but if something were to
happen I wouldn't want to be unprepared.

That said, a 5 inch blade in addition to your SAK should do you just fine. Hopefully someone in your party has a machete or machete-type tool in case you do have to bushwhack, but a 5 inch blade will be better than nothing in a pinch. The Fallkniven or Busse 5 or 7 would be a great choice. The Busse would likely be easier to sharpen (carbon steel as opposed to stainless) in the field, and the Kydex sheath will hold up perfectly in the jungle. The sheath on the Fallkniven is not so good for that, according to Jeff Randall, if memory serves me correctly.

Anyway, sounds like an exciting trip! If you don't mind, could you post some of your experiences in the Wilderness Forum when you get back?

Have a safe journey!

Peace,

Brian.

Yep I sure will Brian - I think I have decided on the Mod.A1 Fallkniven with the kytex sheath as I have heard loads of good stuff about it and there is a low shipping fee (as I live in the U.K.). Thanks Everyone!

For a little more money, you can buy one knife and never buy one again...BUSSE Basic #7.

If money is an issue, that's cool. Again, like all others have said, any of Cold Steel's heavy duty pieces are terrific-I have had a bunch, and lately have carried either a Recon tanto or an SRK hiking/amping. My fiance lost our TrailMaster!!! That too was a hell of a knife!

BUT!!! Kraton grips wear easily under heavy use! I recmnd buying a factory second from CS direct. save money, and worry less about ruining the knife/misplacing it. With money you save, buy a Ka Bar old-school classic Marine Fighter! Cheap as dirt and strong as hell!

Have a blast!

God's choices in inflicicting suffering are unsatisfactory to us, nor are they understandable, unless innocence offends him. Clearly he needs some help in directing the blind fury with which he flogs the earth...

NickW,

Good choice on the Fallkniven A1, you won't regret it. Don't overlook the need to resharpen if you're going to use your knife a lot. My favorite is still the DMT Diafold in coarse and fine and it's always in my backpack.

Anyways, have a safe and memorable journey. And I'll echo Brian's voice: please post your experience.

I hope I'm not too late. The word "expedition" brings to mind one knife for me: the Busse Basic #7. Do a search on the "knives for sale-individuals" for the word "Busse" and set the time parameter for the last 30 days. I've seen a couple for great prices, much less than I paid for mine, and I feel like I got a great deal on a fantastic knife. It is a permanant attachment on my backpack. In fact, here's something you can read that will convince you better than I can: http://www.bladeforums.com/tests/index.html
Whatever you choose, have fun, be safe, and let us know how it goes!

Here's an even better one (the one that hooked me!) http://www.physics.mun.ca/~sstamp/knives/busse_basic.html
