So... What's the story with the BIG finish?

From what I gather, it came about as a replacement for the Competition Finish. Did hogs, rats, and dogs have an issue with INFI dimples? Or that there was some of the decarb left on the comp finish blades?

I also noticed that some good deals on BIG finished blades, get passed over on the exchange? What are the pros and cons of BIG? Is it a love it, or hate it type thing? If so, why?

Curious piglets wanna know

The Busse-kin secondary market is what it is...the markup varies according to several factors; and how good a price is considered depends on the person looking at it.

I'm personally a fan. I don't have to worry about ruining a satin finish, and despise coated blades, so less work for me in the end.

I love it. Like Timmy said you don't have to worry about using it, looks great, and doesn't have the rust prone issues cf allegedly had.

I have a pretty good grip on the secondary market... It just seems that folks shy away from them.

I'm with Hog Hat Timmy and Midwest Firehog on this one... Fairy close to a satin finish, at almost CG pricing... WIN-WIN in my book!

I'm just trying to find out if there's a downside to these beauties!

Still wish they'd put that wicked CF convex edge on the BIGs. :D

I don't believe that BIG replaces the original intent of CF (competition edge at the expense of blade finish), but does a good job of replacing what CF had become in the end - an uncoated, roughly-finished knife with a standard edge. I suspect the new method is more efficient from a manufacturing standpoint.

Happy to hear that... Well... Read that. :D
I'd love it if we saw more of the CF released! They are the best edges to come out of the shop!

I don't see it as a CF replacement. The CF SOB's are my favorites and I'd love to see it on more knives. A friend, my daughter and I all have CF SOB users and no issues in over a year.

The BIGs are pretty sweet and I'd like to have more someday.

I think the BIG finish looks like a stripped coated blade. So to me its a good user knife without the added costs of a proper satin finish like you see on the LEs. I think its a way for Busse to save money on the final finishing and they in turn pass that savings on to the customer.

I don't think people are shying away from them just that sales across the whole board is down. I have seen goods deals all over the internet just sitting. Not that I have enough money to notice the economy but it must be back down.
I have not had a big finnish so can't say anything about them. I have comp finish and love it. It is rougher on some blades like the SOB and truly exquisite on others like the TGLB. My TGLB is like a mix of satin,DC and rough comp, all comes together perfect.
Busse stopped offering the comp because some people did not get what it was suppose to be and in turn was complaining and sending them back in as they were really expecting satin. A few ruined it for the rest.

I'll second that the market has slowed very much, just in the less than a year since I've found bussecombat... Sub $400 HELLRAZOR sitting? Wow is all there is to say about that.......

I've got a Blade 2014 SOB in CF. I never expected it to match my satin finish knives. But, and perhaps I lucked out, it's one gorgeous blade. The dimples are beautiful and the rest of the blade, though being short of satin, is free of any blemish .... Wish I had a better camera for close up picks..... Everyone that has seen it think of it as a beautiful blade.

I've got to admit that the edge is VERY good on it. Too bad that I don't remember who did the original sharpening. Love it, love it, love it......was playing with it a good part of the day yesterday......:D

However, it didn't stay wet for very long so I do wonder about the ease to rust. I've read a few comments about the CF rusting........ Wondering if I should give it a vinegar bath...... Any thoughts?

You shouldn't have any problem with the newer CF and rust. My TGLB has shown none at all and the CF SOB I had even after carrying for a full day in very wet humid conditions showed no signs of anything. You would know that is saying something if you have ever been around here June through Aug. I believe the problems with rust on the CF blades came from the originals,a lot of decarb was left over on those blades. IIRC even those did not have the rust go past the decarb layer.

Have two blades in Competition Finish, a TGLB and a SOB, by far my favorite finish. The only BIG finish I have is the ASH, and would guess the reason that it is less popular, is because it is a saber grind instead of full flat. I would have preferred the original profile of the classic ASH, but had to take what I could score without paying a bunch more money. Not sure if the other knives in BIG finish are profile variations of the originals. Anybody?

I was really hoping to see it come into the on site ordering options but that hasnt happened yet. I hate coated blades but satin is pricey.

I love the Big finish is less polished than the satin but as stated before it is more forgiving. When the 13B comes out I wish it would be with the BIG finish

BIG finish is a great move by Busse...

Having said that, the Comp. Finish is the gold standard for a lot of Busse users that mirrors the authentic, rugged, utilitarian, hard-use philosophy of the brand ...

IMHO, the perfect s**tstorm of bad timing did in widespread availability of Competition Finish...

the equation's factors:

mainstream popularity of the TGLB with zombimania + otherwise non-knife folk buying their first "investment grade" fixed blade + perceived "flaws" in the Comp. Finish

=

buyer remorse + mass returns + the widespread end of CF

This was my experience. I got a Jackhammer and Hell Razor in the original Competition Finish, and developed a coat of surface rust on just sitting in a drawer. I tried bluing them to see if that would help, but after sitting a drawer for five years, they liked like this:

I got a TGLB with the new Competition Finish and haven't had an issue with rust. I liked it enough that I asked for Competition Finish on my Butaniku, but by that time they weren't doing it anymore.
