BIG finish...

This was my experience. I got a Jackhammer and Hell Razor in the original Competition Finish, and developed a coat of surface rust on just sitting in a drawer. I tried bluing them to see if that would help, but after sitting a drawer for five years, they liked like this:

I got a TGLB with the new Competition Finish and haven't had an issue with rust. I liked it enough that I asked for Competition Finish on my Butaniku, but by that time they weren't doing it anymore.

Those are defective for sure... You should send them to me for proper disposal. :)

I'll take backup's in case you can't trust this guy….. :roll eyes: :p

Seriously though, what needed to be done is scrubbing off the decarb with something like scotch brite or steel wool (anything abrasive really) which will conform to all the crevices without changing planes/grinds. Once you get it off, rust is almost nonexistent on INFI…. :)

JTT... I put Renwax on one of my 2 CF SARsquatches and it's been fine... I let the other, be what it was gonna be. I took Bossmans advice and beat that surface rust off.

I know that yours may look bad, but that is just the decarb, and only on the surface.

What I really want... Is to see more of the killer cool comp convex edges!

.

I don't believe it would be accurate to say the BIG SF has not been popular, I would disagree personally. They have done around half dozen models so far that seemingly sold well on the secondary market, I believe we will be seeing more of it soon…. I hope ;) :)

I thought about Ren wax a little late. I took the rust off with Scotch Brite and then blued them again with a different brand of blue. So far, that's done the trick. Good thing too, because I don't think I could afford the disposal fee's.

I don't so any need to post those pictures on here. If you're unhappy with those knives you should talk to Busse. The latest CF is NOT like that and your pictures are not a representation of it.

^^^^ no worries. He did mention that this is no longer an issue. Nothing wrong about those pics, IMHO. No company or product is perfect..... If anything, this is one company that will do what needs to be done to make things right.

If you understand what the original comp finish was about there is nothing for Busse to take care of. Unless I am misreading JTT is not upset about it but just showing what the original CF finish would do compared to the newer CF. If I had gotten one I would have taken the decarb layer off first thing. I like seeing those pics posted if for nothing else to see just how rust resistant infi is with that rusted decarb sitting in contact with the infi and not affecting it.

It's not a complaint, just an illustration of why the original Competition Finish might have been discontinued. When those knives were offered, everyone who bought them knew they were straight out of the oven with no finishing to the blade other than a wicked edge. And they were sold at a suitable discount. I got what I paid for, and if those knives were offered again at the same price, I wouldn't hesitate to buy more.

BTW - This is what they look like now, with the decarb mostly ground off and many coats of Oxpho-Blue put on (decarb takes a cold blue fairly well; INFI doesn't):

From what I have encountered nothing takes a cold blue well. At least I could never get it to take on anything without wiping right off.
