Big Folders? Thoughts??

What are your opinions on Big Folders? Talking about those huge folders with giant +5" blades. Some of the Cold Steel models come to mind.

Are they useful or practical? What is the point of having one when you can have a fixed blade? Are the locks secure on them or is there a potential to break? I'm assuming a huge folder is intended for hard use, will it sustain or hold up to large use?

Lastly, If you like huge folders, what are some good blades?

In most cases they are nothing more than a "look at me" niche. Something to satisfy the male ego.

If the application you plan to use it for requires something large then fine. Otherwise the above description applies.

98% of the time they are fun toys. Yeah, you can hack the hand off of your neighbor, old man Jenkins, when he sticks his arm under your fence. But how practical is that? We love our knives, and big honkin' blades have more knifeness, more thwack, more of everything that fires off the pleasure neurons in our brains. They do have a practicality in very limited circumstances, but mostly they are just dang fun to carry and play with. I have about 5 of the big Cold Steel folders, and am plotting my next purchase. They are pretty impractical for EDC, but they get about 50% of my pocket time nonetheless.

Pretty much anything from Cold Steel is a good place to start. They have the strongest lock in the industry (in my view), and are reasonably priced. You'll be hard pressed to find a big folder lineup from other manufacturers.

I love my Cold Steel Recon 1 XL Clip Point...

No they are not practical , they are Noviltey toys for the most part , you need somthing for "hard use" just get a fixed blade

Profound. Thank you for shedding so much light into my life. Now I can go about and get knives only you approve of. Thanks!

Indeed. :D
Before I found the internet, I didn't realize how much I needed the approval of others... ;)

My XL G-10 Espada worked great for clearing a path through thorns and other underbrush when I got lost on a hike (I should have brought a compass).
I didn't bring a big honkin machete with me, as I was just going on a hike; the Espada fit into the posket of the pants I was wearing that day.
It worked out really well, and made getting lost fun in the process.

Actually, how it went was along these lines:
"I think it's over that way."
"I could have sworn it was right over there..."
"I might be a tad lost. Hmmm..."
"Yep, I'm lost. Hey, I'm lost; yes!!!"

Moral of the story: when you decide to run off through the woods chasing a deer, maybe you should have a compass.
And bring a big knife.
But most important, getting lost is fun.

I have a few of the bigger C.S. knives. Mostly just reside on my dresser as displays. Occasionally I might carry one IWB if I am not packing my heater. I don't carry them in pocket, as I do not like tip-up carry. IWB is fine though. I would not use them for much, as it would probably elicit some nasty responses from the sheeple. My friends understand though. ;-)

I really like to carry fixed blades so really never have a use for folders over 4". Hell, 99% of edc needs can be handled by a traditonal.

I have one big blade Cold Steel folder. Why? It's easier to carry than a fixed blade of same size. Have to confess I don't need it much, a shorter blade handles most of what I need.

If you have water, food, shelter...and nice weather...and have nice roads around you...just in case.
:)
p.s. I never enjoyed getting lost while deer-hunting in Michigan swamps in the winter...

I have a bunch a knives. I can EDC a different folder everyday of the month and I have more comming. Is a big folder practical, who cares, at some point I may want something larger than my Satu Ti Ti for no reason and I find it comforting to know there out there. Seeing those pics of the Recon 1 on this thread has got me thinking I may need one! Yes, I absolutely need one, Cold Steel here I come.

I have the 4" recon 1 and love it. Biggest folder I have. Carried it yesterday.

Take a look at Spyderco's new Tatanka. 5" blade. Hasn't come out yet, but will probably do so in the next few months.

But on your point of practicality... How practical is it to edc a fixed blade? I have and in my opinion it's a PITA. I would much rather carry an overbuilt folder than a fixed blade any day.

More knifeness that's probably my new favorite word.
