Big Folders? Thoughts??

Cold Steel does have a great lock, but I find folders that big are more of a novelty. 5 inches is not terrible for a folding knife, but is about my maximum length that I want for a folding knife blade.

What is the point of having one when you can have a fixed blade?

You can't clip a fixed blade inside your pocket. At my old job, carrying a knife in your pocket was fine, but you weren't allowed to carry a sheathed knife on your belt. So if you were one of those guys who wanted to carry a big knife for self-defense or whatever, you weren't, in fact, able to have a fixed blade.

I have a few that are 9 inches opened. That's about my limit. They do draw attention when you use 'em in public but I just like the big 'uns.

I see the trend going to smaller folders, including fixed blades. For basic EDC, this just makes sense unless... one likes BIG knives. :D

The only 'mega-folders' I own are an older Cold Steel XL Voyager with the 6" clip-point blade, and an old SOG Pentagon Elite with the 5" blade. I don't carry either one, but IMO they would both work well for certain chores, esp. the Voyager.

For me, the size limit of a folder I'll carry would be a 4" or slightly over blade, like the Spyderco Military or Police, neither of which I consider a 'mega-folder'. That's about my comfort limit for big folders.

As for fixed-blade carry, there are some places where even a small FB would be restricted to carry, whereas a big folder wouldn't be restricted. However, in my own uses of folders, I've found I can accomplish quite a lot of various uses with blades considerably less that 4".

Personally I don't see the point of large folders (5" and over).... If you need a large blade, it shall be to do some real hard works, and I this case a fixed blade shall be better.....

IMHO, a good folder is between 3" and 4"... Over this size I think I will prefer to have a fixed blade....

Couldn't have said it any better myself.

Get a Rajah 2 or G-10 Espada XL.
Throw it on your pack as a folding machete.
Then use it as such for trail clearing needs.
THEN you'll get it. :)

Some places don't allow carry of fixed blades. At my prior job, carrying a knife in the pocket was fine, but you weren't allowed to wear a knife on your belt. My current job is similar, though working overnight I have a little more leeway and could probably wear a fixed blade if I wanted, day and evening shift however could not. So for people who work at places like that, fixed blades are simply not an option-no matter their size. So if someone has chores that a big knife would help with, or wants to carry a knife for self defense(not advocating it, but a lot of people do carry for that reason), a folder is the only option.

There are also strong regulations and limits on blades where I love.
But IMHO there is a sort of contradiction in the purpose/expectations of folders and large blades.

This one inspired me to go high:

Carson has been working hard as well:

Is that a Demko? And I've been seeing those Carson Tech knives popping up lately. They're a bit big for my tastes but they definitely have my interest, particularly how they answered unlocking a frame lock without putting your fingers in the way.

Please tell me that's an SnG, because if that's an SMF... well, just wow.

Anyway, I can't really compete with those but I've had a few decent sized folders in my day.

Crusader Forge FIFP. Not a huge blade in terms of length. But I'd still consider this the biggest folder that I have ever owned.

Another seriously beefy folder. Grayman Satu, compared to my Spyderco Military (to be honest, I consider the Military to be pretty long bladed knife).
