BIG Folders

I have not been on much the last couple of years...lots of stuff gone on..some good some bad..just life I guess. My first love is firearms, with knives being a close second, well that and optics. When it comes to knives I tend to gravitate to large folders:

Camillus Max
REKAT Sifu
Cold Steel XL Voyagers
Cold Steel El Vaquero

So I noticed that Cold Steel has the Rajah which a student of mine just picked up and I was pretty impressed for the money (VERY SOLID LOCK) I noticed it was made in Taiwan (not too sure about that yet) steel looked like it was AUS 8 which not my favorite steel but I can put a heck of an edge on. so my questions are:
Who else makes large folders these days?

Anybody out there carry a large folder as an EDC?

BTW Good to be back on

What Derrick said.

Most of Cold Steel folders are overpriced considering their quality.

After: Yes...I have seen the Espada....matter of fact I have a larger one then the one Cold Steel makes that I got from Spain that has a 12" blade  total crazy and not useful at all to carry but fun none the less.

I agree with the above post that a great deal of their knives are "over priced" based on materials used. I think that is really true for some of their "higher end" knives that may have G-10 or Micarta handles and still have an AUS 8 blade.

In the lower end such as the Voyager series still offers a good knife for the money. Comparing the Voyager to my Spyderco or Benchmade Griptilion all have the same handles Zytel, plasitc (whatever) steel may be better in the Benchmade, the VG-10 on the Spyderco I never could get a good edge on..that AUS8 stuff I can sharpen to a wicked edge.

Plus I had a friend use a Voyager to cut concrete board prior to laying tile and hammer the same knife through wood at camp...its pretty much nothing more then a pry tool with a tanto point today but I know some of my more "expensive knives" would not have held up to that abuse.

why, " BIG " ? one of the advantages of a pocket knife is easy carry and light weight. my edc is a schrade medium stockman. never seen nuthin i could'nt cut with it. paul:)

The biggest folders I carry is the fullsize Benchmade Rukus, and Strider SMF. Any bigger than that I'm moving up to a fixed.

I condidder the Rukus to be large compared to most folders. But it's not too big or anything, pretty much perfect size for me.

The large (5.5") Espada is a great knife, and I usually bash on CS. I have a DDR 5.5 bowie Maxx as well as a Cuda. Neither can be beat for defense or general cake cutting, but the blades are too thin for "hard" use. The best of both worlds will be mine soon once I get my HD Maxx. 3/16" blade and frame slabs.

the cold steel scimitar is make in japan or at least the one that i have got is, had it a couple of years now and i am pleased with it. i think that cold steel got an unnecessary bad rap and cannot get away from it. while it is not my favorite knife, there quality has not diminished, even though they are made in taiwan.

my favorites are spyderco, kershaw, microtech, emerson, for folders. hard to go wrong with any of them.

I was just wondering how long it was gonna take this time...

Its as predictable as the sun rising every morning.

I have been edcing the 5.5 inch Large Espada for a couple of weeks now.
Quite impressed with this knife, AUS-8A steel and all. Even though the knife is made in Taiwan, the blade is Japanese AUS-8A. I've never really had any issues this steel for regular use.

Eventually I will get the Espada XL, but mostly for home use. Oklahoma state knife law has no length limits, but Oklahoma City I have a question about.
States it is illegal to display, or offer for sale a knife with a blade longer than 4 inchs. That to me does not address whether it is illegal to carry one.

I have been getting away with 5 inch + on a regular basis since moving here in 2002. Camillus Cudamaxx 5.5 D2, Benchmade VLF, Cold Steel Gunsite, 5 inch Voyager, Vaquero Grande, and now the Large Espada.

But then I am not doing anything to attract the attention of the men in blue either.:D

spyderco manix
spyderco endura
kershaw cyclone
kershaw g10 tyrade

Was that a special order project, or an option offered? I had a Camillus version and always thought it a little on the thin side. I could really get into a 3/16th's version!!:D

Those are a very small run. I ordered from Darrel in person at a show. Mine is still in the making, but I promise pics. I do have a "special" Cuda Maxx in the trade forum if you have a SMF or Combat Troodon ;)
