BIG Folders

awesome.

Each to his own but I think the reason of being for a large folder is mostly military, Paul Harsey coming to mind, he had alot of direct input from soldiers about it. Extrema Ratio equips the Italian military, Jerry Hossom told me the Retribution folders have a following with our troops overseas. They have extra capabilities which are mostly uneccessary in the civilian realm but I suppose they can be a good tool for a soldier. I noticed I can get a very solid grip on just the end of a Lone Wolf T3 giving a huge amount of reach to it.

Besides that there is the purely mechanical side to it, extra strength and mass being utilitarian in certain applications, I'm an auto mechanic and maybe that had something to do with feeling like most normal size knives are weak, as I am conditioned to using almost unbreakable tools all the time, I get a knife out and all the sudden I am pussyfooting around....that always bothered me so when I first saw the Lone wolf T3 it was a matter of like, 5 minutes before I had one ordered.

When you can find one, the BM Skirmish is a big folder that rides quite nice in the pocket.

Those are a very small run. I ordered from Darrel in person at a show. Mine is still in the making, but I promise pics. I do have a "special" Cuda Maxx in the trade forum if you have a SMF or Combat Troodon ;)

Just got an email from Darrell telling me the HD version is a 12 piece run and already sold out. But he offered to do one in .160" thickness, handle slabs and blade. Going with a plain jane carry version with that awesome bowie style blade he does so well.

I'd like a .160 in a 4" stiletto. That's badass!

Just got an email from Darrell and it is a go! I had jokeningly asked if I could get it by Christmas as I had been a very good boy this year and he said he was currently in the middle of constructing these and I would have it by then!!! This is just awesome.

You lucky bastid. I'm still waiting on a 4" stiletto I ordered in march.

The BM 610 Rukus has been dropped - grab one if you want one. Mine is a keeper - sort of a bushcraft knife in the pocket. It's OAL of 10.20" and weight of 7.86 oz makes it larger than most usual EDC knives. It's 4.25" x .150" S30V utility drop point blade exudes strength, even if my Skirmish, 4.30" X .160" of S30V seems larger, it really isn't - OAL 9.70" weight 6.84 oz. Maybe it's the holes in the Skirmish blade. The Ti handle keeps it's weight down, while the G10/Micarta over SS liners make the Rukus seem strong.

Here my Rukus is with my latest Kershaw JYDII - a Ti/SG-2 version:

That JYDII is no mini-knife, either - see thread #33 above.

Are you serious? I just bought two of them in the past month!
The numbered one was going a begging here on the exchange and I finally broke down and bought it. Had bought the other right before.
My knife buying instincts really shined, if these are indeed dropped.:D

Here's a SOG PE II with a 5" blade and arch-lock. It's an older one and made in Japan.
Pictured with my Junkyard Dog II composite blade.
I traded for it here on the forums and it's a very solid cheaper priced large knife. Locks up very tightly. I don't really need it, but I've kept it mainly because it's huge and impresses non-knife friends.

I just received my Strider GB. This folder is Over the Top!! Just TOO much. And I just love it.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Camillus Aftermath. IMHO a lot better looking blade than Maxx.

Here's some specs I found for Aftermath.... 7.5" closed...wtf! How thick is the blade??

Specifications:
Blade Length: 5.5 in.
Blade Steel: D2 tool steel
Carry System: Stainless Steel Pocket Clip
Handle Material: Carved Titanium
Knife Type: Folding
Length Closed: 7.5

Crikey! that KNIFE is -_ _ _ _ _ _ , FN awesome.

You have one?

One of my biggest gripes with conventional knife manufacturers is that they don't make large folders when there's clearly a demand for it. I have a Rajah II, but though the lock on it is probably as close to having a folder that's as strong as a fixed blade, there are plenty other locking mechanisms that I have full faith in. The lockback design Cold Steel uses are strong enough for self defense and emergency use outdoors. These Voyagers (especially the ones with 5-inch blades) are astounding knives for hunters and will cut and clean game without a problem.

As for AUS8 blades, I hear a lot of people ho-humming it, but I've always thought it was a great folder knife steel. Especially when it's heat treated right, and Cold Steel heat treats their blades very effectively. (Their 440A knives are fully functional and have great edge holding, and I normally hate 440A! I have about a dozen knives of other makes with 440A that are all in my junk box. Only Cold Steel's 440A seems to hold a keen edge. In fact, I can't tell the difference between the old model Recon 1 (440A) and the newer Recon 1 (AUS8). Both get sharp and tend to stay sharp.

Allright boys and girls, someone said the word 'badass' on this thread, let's take it up a notch, shall we??

It is sharp ;) convex ground by Richardj, who did a wonderful job.
