Big Hacker

Lukers,

Let me throw my name in the hat. How did you bend a BM?

As for the B-I-G H-A-C-K-E-R
Just get the best you can afford. There are many fine knives in this catagory, just check to make sure the sheath meets your needs and the handle fits your hand.

I was talking to a fellow knife nut this morning and he suggested I check out fowlerknives.com - now there is a camp machete!!!... with a 14" blade. It also seems to me that I would save myself alot of scraped fingers and knuckles with this machete in the really thick brush.

How did you bend you BM-E?

I'm leaning towards the Busse Battle Mistress or the Fowler Camp Machete right now.

If you're going to spend $300+ for a 14" blade machete, I have another suggestion.

You are now into a blade length that isn't very practical for anything but chopping (unless you need a fillet blade for 300 lb. Alaskan halibut).

Get yourself a 2x48" belt grinder for the same cost as the Fowler. Then buy a $15 Ontario machete, put a razor convex edge on it, and fearlessly chop everything you want with it until you break it. Then buy another...and another...

Basically, you will have solved the problem of durability forever. I speak from experience, courtesy of my sensai, Jerry Hossom.

I have to second Dexter on the Becker Patrol Machete. I was treated to a spectacular display of what it can do this week.It has re-defined my concept of a big hacker.

I'd suggest both the Becker Brute and the Magnum Camp, for fewer $$ than the Busse Basic 9. Should your camp knife actually perform food duties, would think you'd want something that makes a bit more finesse possible than strictly machete/machete-type knives.

Roshi -- are you experienced with the Warners Big COuntry Kampr? I liked the looks of it, as well as a couple other knives on the side, particularly the big Loveless Trail knife, which is just a bit more than the Busse. I do agree the Busse may outlast many of the competitors.

Also, Jeff Randall knows what he is doing when it comes to roughing it in real wilds. I'd give plenty of weight to that when considering the RTAK. Which reminds me that Ron Hood recommends one of TOPS' knives.

You might benefit from some reading and searching on the Survival forum under the Tactical/Practical or whatever group.

I would strongly second Will's recommendation of getting a decent cheap machete (I would opt for the Barteaux over Ontario) and altering the edge profile. Based on how that works for you, the experience would lead you to a much better ability to pick a suitable $300 blade.

For those who want to know about the "bent" Battle Mistress, why not simply ask Busse since Lurkers is unwilling to provide the full details. It could be we have another Robertson.

The more I look at the Ricky Fowler camp knife the more I want it! I'm sure some of you guys saw it in Tactical Knives Magazine May issue. But here is another question, will the 1/4" blade need re-profiling after time and repeated sharpenings?

O.k guys where can I get the best deal on a Busse Battle Mistress? and is there any difference between the BM and a Basic 9 other than the blade coat?

I see no one mentioning the MMHW products. Where are you closet MMHW supporters in previous threads? Any Comments?

I also visited this site and didn't see any mention of the steel or handle material used in the Country Kampr. Any guesses Roshi?

Monster,
There are some significant differences between Busse's Combat Line and the Basics Line, most favoring the Combat Line. The Combat Line uses unmodified INFI steel which is a slightly better performer (and more expensive) than the modified INFI. Also, the Combat Line has micarta handles versus the Respirene C handles on the Basics Line. Many prefer the extreme durability of micarta, although, when used in extremely cold climates, the fully wrapped Respirene handle can be an advantage. Either is an excellent choice.

Thanks Bronco, could you give me the run down on "Respirene" it's composition etc.?

Monster, I don't know the chemical composition of resperine c. I can tell you I have owned a basic #5 for about a year now and no other rubber handle can compete with it that I have ever used. It is by far the best. I am a little partial to the Busses and Reeves but they are good knives.

Salamander,
So Respirine is more or less a rubber handle, any worries about rust under the handle material? and are the micarta handles on the Busses' removable for cleaning purposes?
