Big knife ideas! What ya got?

If you end up doing it let me know I have been in the market for one for a while now. I would of course do a full review at no extra cost ;)

I will for sure. That would be a huge challenge for me. Grinding something that long could get bad real quick! If I forged it would actually make that knife easier to make. Have you seen the ones David Farmer is producing? Ive been thinking about getting one from him. He makes a great big bladed knife.

i am looking it up right now, but i can already tell you that if you are gonna try and make one i would rather give you my money

see the thing i don't like about the shape of his parang is that it isn't very practical for what I would use it for...ie bushcraft.

when i look at this knife for some reason i think of like a large bore hunting knife, something I would grab when its tome to go slaughter the pigs before they go out to the butcher...a big pig sticker. Now I haven't held it, but that is just what i see. In the type of nife I am looking for there isn't really a need for a pointy tip. this knife will be used in a utility role and in conjunction with a smaller knife for delicate work. Also, while this knife seems to have some curve to the handle i don't think it is enough. the curve is what makes the chopping motion effortless.

should look a little more like this

I don't know how thick the spine of this knife is either. Allot of people think of a parang as a machete, but the fundamental difference is that the parang is thicker and does not have that wobble that is commonly associated with a machete.

i already posted this pic, but i think this is the way the thing should be shaped. not too crazy about Ricks wrapped handle though. I have heard great things about it, but it's just not for me.

Rick does make a pretty knife and his leather is amazing. That is my style of knife for sure.

Check out Farmers "Dangerous Curves" knife. That one has some style!

yah i saw that when i was looking around over there. It looks like a good knife and comfy too. I don't know why, but i find the blade design of the parang to be more comfortable, efficient, and controllable that that of the Golok...of course that is only my personal opinion.

Alright, Im gonna give it a shot! Ill try to draw one out tonight and maybe profile it if I like the design

I saw this one a few years ago on a Japanese web site. Emailed the guy and it had been discontinued. I have always thought it looked awesome. Looks like quite the chopper! The one on the bottom TS20. Now that's a knife!

Those are sweet! Ok, I need some schooling on these big things. To me I would like to do something a cross between the two Alan posted. I like the more straight back handle of Ricks knife but I like the flowing edge of the other one. Obviously not quite that pronounced but something not flat across. Also, is 1/8 steel okay?

If I'm not mistaken most parangs are on the heavy side but I think you could make 1/8" work.

Haha...if you build it they will come.

1/8 should be fine I think. It looks like the BG Parang made by Gerber is 1/8 steel.

And just so everyone knows...I have called dibs on the ORIGINAL parang if it goes up for sale :D...just sayin

I'm interested to see how the sketch comes out...would you mind posting it when your done Chris?

No drawing on this one! I don't have any paper big enough anyway. I figure I will just grind away until it feels right.

On my way to the shop! Give me a few and Ill post up a pic, who knows how this thing will come out!
