Big knife in the ..... Garage??

I like the Hobbit thing. I wouldn't mind being called a hobbit for having a big knife. . .

Unless they were saying I had big hairy feet. ;)

Sorry for the thread drift.

What is the blade length on the Tusker?

It's 13" overall. It's a great chopper and will work nicely when I just want to pack the Tusker and a folder rather than my axe:thumbup: I'm a novice at wielding anything over a 4" blade so I'm looking forward to trying it on tasks I wold normally use a smaller blade for.

Since we have Scott's (Razorback) attention, I wonder if we could talk about having him build a "Wilderness Survival Knife" and sheath system?

A good stout blade, nice handles, and a sheath with a nice pouch for some Surivival goodies. Then when people ask what is a good Survival knife, we just copy a link to whatever Scott comes up with. ;)

But seriously, we are always going over the various flavors of Wilderness knives, what would the majority of people in this forum want to see?

(I like the one presented in this thread, it's a good traditional peice, with the size and heft to do some real work in the great outdoors, I just want to go on recrod so no one thinks I'm suggesting this one doesn't do a good job of filling the requirements).

Personally speaking, I'd like to see 1/4" thickness or better (.270?)
to add a little weight for the Power Chop.

Also, what about saw teeth on the spine? I know some cheap-assed knives do this rendition , and do it rpetty poorly, but, if done at high quality, wouldn't that be a plus??
Just thinking out loud.

I think you have a good idea in the making. I dought everyone will agree on what a wilderness knife would/should be, but we all could come up with some great ideas. I like the idea of a pouch on the sheath for survival goodies. I personally don't like saw teeth on the back ( I just cut myself with them:o ) but I'm sure there are plenty of people that do.

My main reason for Scott's knife was not to replace my current "survival" knives as I am much more skilled with my GB small forest axe than a large blade at the moment. It was more to replace my axe with a lighter, smaller option that can do more tasks than my axe alone.

The last time I spoke to Scott I mentioned I'm planning on buying one of his PSK's. In my mind, with a good leather sheath, and maybe some micarta scales, that fits the bill for me.

However the more I use/fondle my new Tusker, the more I like it.

That is a really nice looking blade you got there dude

Some people consider a 7" - 8" blade to be the perfect size. And it can be for me depending on the overall weight of the knife & the type of sheath... I think 3/16" is perfect for a blade that size as it is really striving to be a do-it-all knife. I'll bet you can baton through just about anything you can't chop with it and it is probably an efficient cutter on most mediums...

I don't think there will ever be the ultimate survival knife system. There are so many different feelings on what it would be. One thing about being a custom knifemaker, I can try to fulfill someones version of what that might be. As far as a bigger sized Tusker this would be it.

Above is my own personal knife. 1/4" thick by 1 3/4" wide O1 steel, 8" blade 5" handle.
The next pic is a sheath I made for a TOPS Anaconda (Ron Hoods design) also a sheath for my PSK knife and striker. The owner put the two together. I had no idea he was going to do that but it turned out nice.

The striker is a custom piece I made out of O1 which produces a higher amount of spark on a ferro rod then the standard strikers that come with them.

Sorry tarmix101, didn't mean to hijack your thread.

Scott

I'm sorry too Tarmix, for the hijack.

Scott, I like that 1/4" thick beauty! Also the Anaconda sheath system that the owner put together is very cool.

I wasn't suggesting you build the "Ultimate" survival knife, (but if you call it "Utopia"), more along the lines if you got a handful of people to agree on a concept, then it may have larger appeal.
The blade is, of course, primarily why we are all here, but, a good survival sheath system is sorely lacking.
SpecOps has the "Survival" Sheath, and that's about it, of course, besides asking one to be custom made.

I like the combo of both large and small blade in the sheath system, That's the kind of thing I have been doing for many years.
And now, Large blade and multi-tool/SAK is a good combo. But that doesn't leave any pouch or space for any other PSK gear.

It's something I am still pondering.

SkunkWerX, where are you located in Maryland? The Chesapeake custom knife show is Sunday Dec. 10. I'll be there, at the Chesapeake Bay knife club table. If you get a chance stop by the show and we can talk about your ideas. I can't say when i could work on something with being a year backlogged on orders.
Scott

hey Scott, thanks for the invite. I'm in Burtonsville, east Montg. Co.

I think that is the weekend my daughter has an iceskating competition and my parents roll up from Florida, so I'll be getting very domesticated during that timframe.

But, yes, I'll check the calendar, and see if I can work something out.
i have a buddy or two that likes a good knife show, so we can try to motor up.
Is that going to be at the Timonium Fair Ground???

A year backlog is good thing!
Keep up the good work. And after the holidays keep me in mind for one of your small survival necker knives, I just missed on the 5 you sold off, but, with Christmas around the corner, it was probably best for my marriage. ;)

I'm sorry too Tarmix, for the hijack. .

Don't sweat it. I like where the thread is going. ;)

Scott, like that sheath for the Anaconda, PSK, and your stricker. I personally think your PSK with a spot for the stricker would be pretty cool.

Thanks for sharing Guys. Like the different ideas.

Thanks tarmix101. The show is at the Holiday Inn next to the fairgrounds. Take a peak in the knifemakers for sale forum. Hint PSK. :)
Scott

Sweet knife Tarmix...I really like the cruel beauty of Scotts designs...They would remind me of mine..err if I had any talent!!! :)

Rat...I agree...the more you use a knife the more nimbal it get's...My 15" AK is the perfect example...I have used it so long, now I can use it in the kitchen with no worries!!

Scott...Ahh you sell those 01 firesteel thingies??

Year backlog?? wow I was complaining about being 3 weeks behind since I started doing kydex!!:D

I don't have the knife with me at the moment but the handle is at least 4 1/2 " with the blade between 7"-8" long. I believe it is between 3/16"-1/4" thick.

The steel is convex ground A2.

Dessert Ironwood slabs.

The handle is 5" long and the blade is 3/16" thick, 1 1/2" wide, 8" blade with a 1" choil. 13" overall.
Scott

Thank you both of you for the information.
