Hi...need some advice from those of you that have used machete type blades in the field.

I am going be spending a lot of time in the woods in April and May and want a big blade to do some hard use tasks while I am out there.

I don't know much about these types and what I should spend to get a quality built one (doesn't have to be top of the line but I don't want a cheap either).

I have been reading about Kukri's but I just don't know.

I assume many of you will have some input. Thanks!

depends.
Khukuri are mostly heavy choppers, machetes are for lighter vegetation.

State intended use and how much you have to spend, you will get some suggestions.

I get the impression you may want a bolo as opposed to a machete if it's that hard use. Bolos and kukris can handle tougher stuff than the standard "machete." I consider a true machete to be more of a grass blade in general.

I'd go with something from Condor knife and tool, it depends on what you will be using it on, if more hard wood, splitting, chopping, etc I'd go for something thicker and heavier like an axe, kukri, or heavy machete, Busse type chopper. If more vines, brush, foliage, then you definitely want something light, like a thinner stock machete so you don't wear yourself out swinging something heavy all day.

You would be better off with a saw and an axe.

But then there should be plenty of dead fall around that you shouldn't have to do much splitting. ;)

A normal sized camp/field knife would work fine for knife type uses.

I have a Cold Steel Kukri Machete.

It's easy to carry, handles well and is tough as nails... for all I know it's made of the same steel nails are made from.

The handle is nothing to write home about, but a good afternoon of chopping won't ruin your hands.

Sheath could be better, but it's functional.

I like it more and use it more than my other "traditional" machetes.

I've used a Condor Golok Machete for cutting small trees, thick branches, vines, brush, etc... Typical machete stuff.

I'm not a "bush crafter" and I don't even know what that means, but the Golok has served me well:thumbup:

Check out an 8 or 9" leuku before you buy. It might be a better all-around ticket for you.

Becker BK9, BK21
Almost anything by condor but especially the Moonshiner, HD Kukri, Pack or Engineers Bolo,Duku Parang, Mini Duku Parang...etc etc
Aranyik Enep
Junglas
Tops Tracker

Any of those will fit all your needs and budget... The BK21 and tracker will stretch into the 120.00 area....but still well under 150.00 delivered... the rest can be had from 40.00 to 80.00 delivered leaving room for a second knife of smaller size for more mundane tasks.....

Not sure where you are in NC but our shop is located in Salisbury. If you are in driving distance come on by and see us. We will do our best to make sure you get what you want/need!

Dang. Wish I had Whitty's store around here. Anywhere in Washington, Oregon or Idaho would do.

Drive over there, NCHunter... then come back and show us all the stuff you got.

I used a Cold Steel "Heavy Machete". No complaints, it did what I needed. Be aware though, you will need to sharpen a Cold Steel machete before use. Apparently, Cold Steel exempts machetes from the "world's sharpest ..." part of their slogan.

I find the parang shape of blade chops very nicely while still being pretty nimble and not tip-heavy. The Khukri shape is tip-heavy and can also chop really well, as mentioned the Becker BK21 is a fine specimen of one. The Ka-Bar Parangatang is my personal favorite for chopping, the handle shape is the only downside and you can eliminate discomfort with some gloves.

I know most here would recommend a fixed blade, but I am going to throw my hat in the ring for a folder - how about the CS Rajah II :D

I like the shorter Tramontina machetes or bolo type blades. Check out Baryonyx Knife supply too, he has a ton of larger hard use blades at great price points.
