My buddy wants a large fixed blade suitable for survival, combat, and any other hard use/abusive scenarios. Here are the prequisetes:

!. between 5 and 9"

2. Leather stacked handle

3. Plain Edge

4. TOUGH!!!!

5. price >150 USD

And considerations beyond the ever wonderful and useful Ka-Bar... Have fun gents! I know you won't steer 'im wrong!

Greater than - one of the Camilus Fisk, Busse, Fallkniven, etc.

Less than - Swamp Rat, Ranger, HI Kukri, etc.

WHOOPS :foot: sorry I've had a few chilled beverages since getting off a 16 hour shift... Less Than. There that's easier...

Orthogonal1, please let me know where you can find a Rat thats between 5"-9" for under 150! Jason

And let me know where you can find one with a stacked-leather handle! ;)

If the leather handle really is a must, the Ka-Bar would be his best bet in that price range IMO.

I'd vote for a Swamp Rat, or perhaps the new Scrap Yard Knives (both are sub-companies of Busse). New models will be released at Blade within the next weekend.

They may not fit the criteria of the Leather Stacked Handle though...

Stainless, tough, stacked leather, plain edge, 6" blade = Ontario's Army Quartermaster

This thick, wide blade was used as a pry bar for opening shipping crates, and the blunt end was used as a hammer as well as the knife serving as a cutting tool. These knives were also "traded" to WWII infantry troops and used in combat.

You may want to look at one of the SOG Bowies or SOG Scuba. You might be able to find one of them at around that price range or perhaps a bit more. I've seen them on eBay from time-to-time under that price.

Also, there are a few Hattori models that may fit the bill. For pictures of these knives, you can look at this link below:

Good luck in your quest!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would also say go for the SOG original bowie. I still would like to get one of those myself.:D

Blackjack made several different models with stacked leather handles, and the convex grinds allow the blade to be very strong yet cut very well. Older Effingham models can be found on ebay; I'm not sure about all the newer production models though.

However,
My buddy wants a large fixed blade... between 5" and 9"
That ain't large! :)

Well, large enough for said applications anyway... we're not talkin a daggone machete or ultimate death-giver here!!! :D

Great Posts! Keep em comin!

Robert do you have personal experience with the Army Quartermaster? I personally wouldn't think that 440A would stand up to much abuse, IMO...I could definately be wrong though. My wife can attest to that.

Also might look at the Bark River Teddy Bowie or hunter. I just ordered one with a stacked leather handle and no fullers from www.dlttradingcompany.com. It seems like it would fit the bill for your friend. I have been extremely happy with the knives I have from Bark River and can't wait to get this one!

I have tested it in other knives, not specifically the quartermaster shown.

If you want stainless, it's a very good choice (440A) as it is tougher than most stainless, if you want even tougher then non stainless steel should be your choice.... stainless or non stainless steel your choice.

Oh - forgot the "leather handle" part.

Looked at a Rat at a close (for this area, anyway) pawnshop for $145. As all the Benchmades were at close to retail, I figured that would be the retail price of the Rat. So, I suppose I should have VISA'd it (I rarely find deals).

Hello Gentlemen, I’m the friend he posted this for. I had been only reading on here for a few days to see if I could come across anything that I felt suited my taste. I haven’t come to a decision on which I want yet, maybe I just over think things but I research the hell out of everything before I get it. Id really like a leather stacked handle but is it limiting my choices too much? Thanks for all the recommendations so far

I think that the BK&T BK-7 is an awfully good tool, esp. for the price
