I figure I'm not the only one to do this so lets hear any stories you may have to share. What I speak of is the selling of a knife and then the realization that you made a HUGE mistake. This almost happened to me, but at the last moment I realized I had made a boo-boo and the buying party was VERY gracious in letting me off the hook. I was selling a custom J.W. Smith framelock, his newest model RF-1, that was special in a couple of ways. First the knife has a 4.0" blade and is only one of a very few four inch bladed framelocks by John. Secondly another forumite, PenguinVA, suggested that John build this one extra with me in mind. That second reason has a lot more meaning to it than the first, although I have been lusting after a larger framelock from John!

So, with the buyers money order in hand, I emailed him to explain my situation. Even though this fellow wanted the 4" bladed framelock as much as I did, he was very, and I mean VERY, gracious in letting me off the hook. I don't know whether to mention his name or not so I'm erring to caution and not, but I don't mind telling you he has my friendship now!!

Btw, this framelock of John's just seems to get smoother and smoother with every opening. I love it!:D  :)

So now lets hear it what almost got away, what did get away, and have any made their way back home????

Sheesh, I traded a Spyderco Civilian for a Timberline Zambezi...

The knife is alright but the sheath. Aaargh. It has too many straps hanging out everywhere and when I removed them I noticed something really bad. If you reinsert the knife there is a big risk that it goes out through one of the holes where one of the straps goes through. It´s very easy to stab yourself. Talk about a bad trade.

Who designed this piece of junk. As soon as I´ve got som cash I´m going to order a new sheat from Normark.

This sucks,
Colinz

It takes me so long to decide on which knife to get next, then the money never comes as fast as I like, that's why I have never sold or traded a knife that I've had in my hand. I've never fell out of love with a knife, and I don't know how some of you guys do it.

You dodged a bullet this time, I hope to never be in that position.

Art, remind me never to buy a knife from you! :)

Just kidding, i know youre an honest guy, and i know you would have gone through with it had the buyer been less forgiving. Youre lucky he was so nice. Besides, how many times do i have to tell you, STOP selling those JWS folders! Theyre awesome, we both know that, keep them. :) I have 2 of them, theyre among my favorite knives at ANY price.

I sold a perfect, beautiful custom Hogstrom dagger here in BF a few months ago, after making the deal, i hadnt heard back from the guy for a few days, i began to suspect the deal had fallen through, and to tell the truth, i was actually very relieved, but he did finally email me and still wanted it, and so, off it went, I'll miss it, i also regret selling my NIB Lg Sebenza Stars and Stripes, wish i still had it, but, the great thing is, whenever im selling a knife, its basically always so that i can pay for a new one, so the bitterness of losing a knife is offset a bit by the joy in getting the new one.

Good point Meg. That is very true about selling to buy. The thing was I was selling to pay..........pay Uncle! After looking at everything though it seemed I had jumped the gun and didn't really need to let it go and I am VERY happy at the final outcome.

You know two Smith's is where I stand now, but both are rotated for daily carry. I do have number three on the horizon but it will still be April/May before it is created.

Then there was the Brend Model 2 folder I sold for a mere pittance.................you know I still can't talk about it:( :( :(

These days it seems I only sell knives to buy guns. I don't regret it one bit - once I have the gun in my hand that is! Once I have someone interested in a knife I have for sale, I box it up and put it away. If I keep taking it out and messing with it, it would just make me think I had made a mistake.

As far as I'm concerned, once someone has agreed to buy a knife, I no longer own it. It becomes their knife - it is only in my care until I get their money order and send it out. I'm serious - I don't even look at it.

If I had bought a knife from someone and both parties had agreed it was a done deal, and the other guy went back on it, I don't know what I'd think...

I think you got off lucky.

I know what you mean Antdog. once I commit to selling a knife, I zip up the case and forget about it. I'm just holding it for the new owner. That's not to say that sometimes I don't regret selling a knife. I just figure that sooner or later my collection will reach perfection and I will be content. At least that's what I tell myself.:D

That's exactly it, Anthony. Once it's sold, it's sold, period. If I regret it, oh well, it was my mistake. I have regretted a lot of sales (sometimes as they were being negotiated) but once the deal is done, it's done.

I guess it's all about getting to that "next perfect addition". :)

I've regretted 75% of my selling and trading.Sometimes it may take a few weeks or just a few hours to realize my mistake.Unfortuntely my funds are limited,so I always have to sell or trade to get the new item.I don't have patience to wait a save,so like a schmuck I wind up losing money by selling, buying, trading and wind up buying the same knife over again because of my regret.Even then the replacement eventually gets sold or traded,so I wind up in a continuous evil cycle. On the upside, there aren't many knives that I haven't owned at one time or the other. It is better to have loved, than have never loved at all
:p

I NEVER regret a knife transaction,as you and I have talked about Art! I do however miss a beautiful Vallotton Angel that I traded away!! :(

Oh make no mistake about it, had the buyer said one thing about wanting the knife it would have been shipped to him and I would have waited for another xl to come along. But as it turned out the buyer was much like me, I think, and understood where I was coming from and it all worked out. :D :D :D
