Big moose, small knife. (somewhat graphic pics)

Congrats with the moose.
Over here we also tend to use smaller knives when buthering moose.
Not as small as 3" though, but in the 4"-5" range.
No need for a larger blade to butcher a moose as you have clearly shown us.

Below is a pic of a small puukko used to cut of a leg. sorry about the blurry pic but it was a little dark.

I use one with a 6 inch blade though, as it is my "do it all knife".

I had an old Mainer tell me that the best moose he ever shot was the one that was closest to the road.:D--KV

Very cool. Moose hunting is one of my dreams.
Great knife too. Would you have preferred scales on it?

Nah, I enjoy the paracord, it has a very rough surface so it never slips.

P.S. what's the belt knife you had on you in the 8th pic?

That is a Rosarms Companion 2, my traditional hunter.

I carry the C2 on my belt and the Izula on my pack. Both are very very capable blades but I wanted to use the Izula cause it was new :) and the C2 had seen more than it's fair share of work last year. The C2 is probably slightly better as a hunter, only because of the hollow grind. But on the flip side, the Izula is way better than the C2 at other tasks, more of a jack of all trades. As you can see the Izula did a fantastic job and I would never use the C2 for anything else than field dressing. If I had to pick just one, I'd take the Izula.

What did he take the moose with. Calibre, make, model, etc.??

All of us at camp have a Remington pump of some sort, old or new. He was using a 7600 in .308 win.
Bullets were reloads made by his brother, for that gun. I cant tell you the recipe but he was using Hornady SST's in 150gr.

Guess you had to change the paracord wrap after that eh?

Hehe I actually made a bowdrill with that cord. I didn't manage to get a fire going but that paracord was doing its part of the work. It does still smell very umm... manly. lol

There are a couple different contests going on in the RAT Cutlery forum. You should post this in those threads and your Izulu might end up with a sister.

I've put up an abbreviated version of this post in one of their contests... I'm keeping my finger crossed!!! I would love to have another RAT. Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks for all the nice replies!! I'm glad you liked it! :)

How sharp did your knife start out?

And how quickly did it get dull?

Good hunt. Looks like a horse-sized animal.

Moose look awkward in pictures...and terrifying in person! Just like hippos. As large as a draft horse or much larger depending on age, health, sex, etc. Up my way you'll see posted warnings about them in hot-spot areas near roads. If you ever hit a moose in the road it's tall enough that the body of the car will go under its legs...and you'll clip its body and have it fall in your lap and, likely as not, kill you! Good thing spotting them in the Southern and Eastern regions of Maine isn't too common.

Generally calm creatures, but they have about the same disposition as a donkey--they don't take crap from anybody who tries to mess with them. If they think they can charge you it's not uncommon for them to go for it.

Oh, yeah. And Congrats on the kill! Moose is f'ing DELICIOUS! :D

The knife started out as sharp as I could get it on the Spyderco Sharpmaker. What really dulled it was the thick skin of the animal, nice leather in there...
I could have finished the whole thing without touching up the blade but sharper is better... As I mentioned, I touched up the edge 3/4 of the way through.

As for size... well it depends what kind of horse you are thinking... hehe many different breeds, but probably similar in size to your average horse, I think. Maybe a bit taller though, if it was standing. The legs on that thing never end. :D

Nice moose. Everybody in this thread is saying that the meat is really good, but not having had it, can anybody give me an idea of what it tastes like?
