Does anyone make a good quality "original" (New Orleans) style Bowie with a 9 inch-12 inch blade, wood handles, and blade of tool steel (O-1,A2,D2,M2) for a reasonable price, or is something like this a "custom" only propoosition?

Thanks,

Ben

Don't know about "New Orleans style" but when I think big honkin' Bowies I think Marble's Trailmaker or Cold Steel's Trailmaster. You want custom, better prepare to dig deeper in your wallet. Ton's of good stuff to be had from the one-man-makers though. It'd be worth the extra cha-ching!

You want a nice Bowie, check out Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works !!!
And they are as tuff as they come !!!!!!

If you want something for cutting only, why not just use a good kitchen or butcher knife? Why bother with a "bowie knife"?

By a "cutter" I mean that I want a knife that can slash a predator open from end to end with one slice. Or slice a rope or vine. I don't use a knife, any knife, for chopping wood, cabvles, etc.. I carry a small hatchet for that. AND I just LIKE bowies!:D

If you think you're gonna accomplish that with a 9-12 inch blade, well... I'm highly dubious. But hey, I just like bowies myself, so no excuse needed. :D

And by the way, if the blade can't handle chopping wood, it can't handle chopping bones, either. ;)

All this talk of chopping versus cutting just reminded me of Ontario Knives Bagwell Bowies. Check out the Hell's Belle, in particular (my personal favorite). These knives are pure cutters.... They won't even chop onions, but for a fast, light, balanced fightin' bowie they're tops.
The only problem is they're 440A. I know people on this board have them, so we'll see how it performs.

I looked at them, and I thought they were nearly perfect, except for being stainless.

Now, if I could just convince them to make that knife in D2 or M2........

Also, I can't believe no one mentioned the Cold Steel Laredo Bowie (someone did mention the trailmaster though, which you can get with a polished finish).

The Laredo is the (Camillius) Carbon V, but the ~$220 street price just seems to steep for me especially with that heavily lacquered and dyed fake cocobola handle...

I'll try to think of some more options...
