Bigger Spydies for EDC

You will probably not get a lot of answers like this, but who knows?

I say do NOT buy the military. If the Endura is too big for you, why go with an even larger package?

I LOVE my militarys, but not everyone will like a big blade/handle.

I agree. I'd disliked tanklike folders like the ZT30x, so I didn't think I could carry bigger than a Delica/MiniGrip size until I reluctantly got my first user Endura. However, I've found that I really like the long, slim format of the Endura (up to 3 now, and can't wait for the FRN FFG) and finally got a LH Millie. IMHO, the Millie is like a Super Endura. SO if you're NOT into your Endura, you will probably not like the Millie.

My advice: get a used Millie here or the 'bay to test drive. Resell it if you can bear to. I've seen them go for as low as $75. Again IMHO, it is one design that every knut should check out.

Just so it's clear, I do like the Endura. A lot. Right now, my "big" blade is the Tenacious and it's in my laptop bag, and I would carry an Endura that way if it wasn't for the fact that I love the FFG of the Tenacious so much. So going from that to a Millie is not that big of a change.

I think I like the idea of picking up a used Millie to see how I like it. If not, it can go to a more deserving person.

Thanks a lot for all the opinions and comments. It gave me a lot to think about and some new perspectives.

Oh, one more thing, I do see a lot of folks using their big folders for food prep. But do you guys actually use it while at home or is it only when you're away from home? I keep a decent sized paring knife at work so I don't often use my EDC folder for that. It's much easier to clean up a dedicated paring knife then a folder.

I also carry a Military daily and like it for food prep too. Sometimes, at home, I will use whatever is in my pocket since it's often much sharper than what it is in the knife block. Admittedly, I'm a bit lazy about sharpening my kitchen knives, but my pocket knives are usually very, very sharp. :D As far as cleanup goes, the Millie is one of the easiest knives to maintain due to it's open back design and liner lock. I just wash off with a little soap and warm water, give it a good shake and quick towel dry and back in my pocket it goes. Just as easy as any dedicated kitchen knife.:D

Does anyone else see an issue with EDC and "in my rotation" being in a same sentence?

Nope, EDC for me means every day carry. I have multiple knives in my EDC rotation, and I may carry one EVERY DAY for a week or a month or longer. Then rotate it out to the next knife in my EDC rotation. But one of those knives in the rotation get carried EVERY DAY. Get it?:)

If you're at home, why don't you use kitchen knives for food?

I usually do, but when I am out on the grill I often use my EDC for checking/tasting what I am grilling. Yeah, and kitchen knife would be better, but I always seem to forget or have my hands too full to carry an exposed blade in addition to the pile of meat (a folded knife in my pocket seems safer and easier).

Additionally, I often prepare food away from home (at work where the knives in the break room are junk...if you can even find one), at tailgate parties, and for some reason I often become the guy in charge of the grilling tasks when I go to other people's homes.

To your point, yes, a kitchen knife was designed for food prep. I would point out though...almost EVERY task I perform with my knife is one that a BETTER tool actually exists, but the EDC blade is more convenient and 99% as effective for the task as the "proper tool".

I have big paws, and prefer big folders like the SMF, Skirmish, Military, Police, ZTxxx etc. However, my EDC's are an old Camillus made Remington scout, and a Spyderco Terzuola slipit. However, I do keep my Benchmade 710 or Military in my bag, and sometimes carry that instead as occassion calls for it (most of the time, smaller is fine).

The only time I need a larger blade, that I can think of, is when I cut fruit at the farmer's market. Other than that, most of my cutting jobs could be accomplished by a Delica, or a Dragonfly, or even a small blade on an SAK. That doesn't keep me from carrying my Enduras and Police model. Maybe it's the mall-ninja in me.
